Malaysia’s motorsport landscape is set to shift into a higher gear in 2025 with the debut of the GR86 Cup Malaysia Series, an exciting new one-make racing championship featuring Toyota’s latest GR86 sports coupe. Spearheaded by Haro Sports and Entertainment Sdn Bhd, the series promises high-octane action and a level playing field for driving purists.
This inaugural series will launch as a support event during the Malaysian round of the 2025 SUPER GT Series, running from 26–28 June 2025 at the Petronas Sepang International Circuit. The format will feature two 10-lap sprint races during this opener, followed by Round 2, which will coincide with the Malaysia Championship Series 300km endurance race. The season will culminate in Round 3’s grand finale—a demanding 86-lap showdown, staying true to the car’s namesake.
“Designed as an ultra-competitive yet affordable racing series, the GR86 Cup Malaysia Series provides enthusiasts with a platform to move up to a more powerful and dynamic vehicle while retaining the importance of a level playing field where the emphasis lies in pure driving skill,” said Fahrizal Hasan, Managing Partner of Haro Sports & Entertainment.
Only 30 units of the GR86 Cup car will be available, offered on a first-come, first-served basis. Each car is imported directly from Japan at a competitive price of RM208,315.00, inclusive of sales tax and motorsport-specific approvals, and delivered to the Sepang circuit.
The GR86 Cup car is a purpose-built race machine, strictly for track use, and is compliant with the 2025 Malaysian Championship Series SP1 category. Under the hood lies a 2,387cc naturally aspirated flat-four engine featuring Toyota’s D-4S direct and port injection technology. With 228 horsepower at 7,000 rpm and 250 Nm of torque at 3,700 rpm, it’s tailored for sharp performance and fast lap times.
Performance upgrades include a Fujitsubo full exhaust system, a six-speed manual transmission, and a Cusco competition clutch paired with a transmission cooler. Power is sent to the rear wheels through a Torsen limited-slip differential, ensuring precise control through corners.
Handling is optimized with KW Racing shock absorbers, featuring inverted strut technology and TRD suspension bushings for rigidity and responsiveness. The cars ride on 17-inch Raxer RP10X forged alloy wheels, shod with 225/45R17 Bridgestone Potenza RE-71RS tyres, providing exceptional grip and cornering stability.
Braking performance is equally race-ready, with Advics monobloc brake calipers—four-piston units at the front and two-piston at the rear—paired with 345mm front and 330mm rear discs, designed to withstand the rigors of competition.
Safety has been engineered into every GR86 Cup car. A 40mm roll cage—exceeding Japan Automobile Federation (JAF) standards—features six main points with side bars on both driver and passenger sides. Inside, drivers are secured by FIA-approved Bride ZETA bucket seats, a 6-point HANS-compatible safety harness, and an onboard fire suppression system.
With its emphasis on affordability, driver skill, and professionally engineered performance, the GR86 Cup Malaysia Series offers a new gateway to competitive racing in Southeast Asia. Whether you’re an aspiring racer or a motorsport fan, the 2025 season promises a spectacle of tightly contested action, roaring engines, and rising talents.
