AFA PRIME Berhad is charting a bold path forward in Malaysian infrastructure with two transformative highway projects aimed at improving safety, alleviating congestion, and boosting climate resilience. As the concessionaire for the KL-Karak Expressway (KLK) and East Coast Expressway 1 (LPT1), the company has announced the KLK Widening Project—set to begin in the second quarter of 2025—and ongoing flood mitigation works along LPT1.

The KL-Karak Expressway Expansion Project covers the stretch between the Gombak Toll Plaza and Bentong Toll Plaza (KM19.2 to KM64.5), a route frequently congested during weekends and festive seasons. Designed to meet increasing traffic demands, the project aims to enhance not just capacity, but also reliability, safety, and long-term adaptability to climate challenges.

Construction will span 48 months, with early works already underway, including slope trimming, drainage enhancements, flood control infrastructure, and the installation of retaining walls. According to Ir. Vijayaraj, Executive Director of AFA PRIME Berhad, “The expansion is about rethinking how a highway should serve its people—not just in terms of capacity, but in reliability, safety, and long-term resilience. Our goal is to build a future-ready expressway.”

The upgraded highway will feature one additional lane in each direction and wider road shoulders—from 2.5 metres to 3 metres—on both sides. This allows for the shoulders to be used as “smart lanes” during peak traffic periods, effectively increasing road capacity and smoothing traffic flow.

Other safety-focused enhancements include eight new emergency bays, enabling faster clearance of disabled vehicles and minimizing disruptions. Special considerations have been made for the high-traffic Genting Sempah Tunnel, where work will only be conducted during off-peak hours to avoid congestion. Floodlights and repositioned lighting will improve nighttime visibility and safety throughout the construction zone.

In tandem with the KLK expansion, AFA PRIME Berhad is actively implementing flood mitigation measures along LPT1. These efforts are crucial in reducing the impact of extreme weather events, ensuring continuous operation of the highway even during heavy rains. The work includes detailed risk assessments, drainage system improvements, and infrastructure upgrades to reduce the likelihood and impact of flash floods.

To maintain safety and manage traffic flow throughout the construction phases, AFA PRIME Berhad has appointed Edgenta PROPEL Berhad as its traffic management partner. With a proven track record in highway operations, Edgenta PROPEL will deploy comprehensive safety measures—barriers, cones, signage, flagmen, and round-the-clock patrols—backed by 24/7 monitoring systems.

Digital Variable Message Systems (VMS) will be installed along the route to provide real-time traffic and emergency updates. These will be complemented by consistent communication through AFA PRIME Berhad’s social media channels, empowering motorists to plan their journeys with confidence.

Both the KLK and LPT1 projects underscore AFA PRIME Berhad’s commitment to Malaysia’s broader infrastructure goals—enhancing national connectivity, enabling economic mobility, and reinforcing public safety. As critical links between the Klang Valley and the East Coast, the expressways are central to the movement of people and goods across the peninsula.

With its focus on modernisation, resilience, and operational excellence, AFA PRIME Berhad is paving the way for a more connected and secure transportation future for all Malaysians.
