Continental has announced plans to discontinue tyre manufacturing operations at its Alor Setar facility in Malaysia by the end of 2025. The plant, which has been in operation since December 20, 1979, produces passenger car and light truck tyres for the Asia-Pacific market, along with motorcycle tyres. It currently employs around 950 workers.
The decision comes after a comprehensive review aimed at strengthening Continental’s competitiveness and long-term performance in the APAC region. As customer demands evolve, the company seeks to optimise its manufacturing footprint and align its product portfolio more closely with market needs.
Continental emphasized that supporting the affected employees is a top priority. Efforts are underway to provide career counselling and to explore new employment opportunities both within Continental’s global network and externally.
Despite the closure, Continental reaffirmed its commitment to Malaysia, highlighting the country’s importance within its broader Asia-Pacific strategy. The company maintains that its relationships with customers and partners in Malaysia will remain strong, underpinned by trust and long-term cooperation.
Continental continues to operate a robust tyre manufacturing network across the region, with facilities in Hefei (China), Rayong (Thailand), Modipuram (India), Kalutara (Sri Lanka), and Petaling Jaya (Malaysia).
Since becoming a fully owned subsidiary of Continental in May 2012, the Alor Setar plant has spanned approximately 133,000 square meters, contributing significantly to the company’s regional supply capabilities. The closure marks the end of a significant chapter, but Continental’s broader vision for growth and service excellence in Asia-Pacific remains firmly in place.
