UMW Toyota Motor (UMWT), in collaboration with the Ministry of Education (MOE), has officially opened registration for the Toyota Eco Youth (TEY) 2025. As one of Malaysia’s most impactful youth environmental initiatives, TEY challenges secondary school students to develop innovative and sustainable solutions to address pressing environmental issues.

Now in its 24th edition, TEY 2025 takes a bold step forward by doubling the number of participating schools from previous years and increasing total funding to RM167,000. This significant expansion underscores UMWT’s commitment to fostering environmental awareness and action among Malaysia’s youth.

This year, 30 schools will take part in TEY—double the number from past editions. Each school will receive a RM3,000 grant to kickstart their projects, resulting in a total funding of RM90,000 dedicated to fostering sustainable initiatives.

Beyond project funding, participants will compete for a total of RM77,000 in cash prizes across various categories, including:

  • Champion: RM30,000
  • 2nd Place: RM20,000
  • 3rd Place: RM10,000
  • Sub-Category Winners (RM5,000 each):
    • Best Social Media Campaign
    • Best Presentation
    • Best Exhibition
  • Most Supportive Teacher: RM2,000

Since its inception in 2001, TEY has empowered almost 600 schools and over 300,000 students nationwide, equipping them with essential skills to become leaders of change. The initiative goes beyond conventional education, providing mentorship, industry insights, and hands-on experience in solving environmental challenges.

Past projects have demonstrated how impactful youth-driven initiatives can be:

  • In Kuala Bikam, students devised a system to minimize agricultural waste, benefiting both community health and environmental quality.
  • In Penang, students initiated a community-based marine clean-up to tackle pollution and restore ecosystems.
  • In Sarawak, youth leaders introduced sustainable farming practices to reduce reliance on harmful chemicals.

By equipping students with Toyota’s 8-Step Problem-Solving Methodology (PSM), TEY empowers participants to analyze environmental issues, identify root causes, and implement practical, long-term solutions.

UMW Toyota Motor’s commitment to sustainability goes beyond just organizing TEY. It aligns with Toyota’s Environmental Action Plan, aimed at achieving zero CO₂ emissions by 2050. Through TEY, students not only gain valuable skills but also become active participants in driving Malaysia toward a sustainable future.

“Toyota Eco Youth isn’t just about raising awareness—it’s about action. By doubling school participation and increasing funding, we are giving more students the opportunity to develop solutions that will drive Malaysia toward a greener future. We are excited to see how this year’s participants will innovate and inspire,” said Datuk Ravindran K., President of UMW Toyota Motor.

Registration for TEY 2025 is now open, and schools have until 3rd April 2025 to sign up. The official programme launches, workshops, and opening ceremonies will take place from 28th to 30th April 2025.
