Stellantis recently announced a strategic partnership with the Penang Science Cluster (PSC) to expand access to high-quality science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education in Kedah. The initiative aims to inspire and nurture a new generation of innovators in the state.
Kedah has consistently lagged behind the national average in student enrollment for STEM education, with figures 3-10% lower than the rest of Malaysia. Recent years have seen an additional decline of 2-5%, largely due to a lack of interest and limited access to quality STEM learning opportunities. This situation underscores the urgency of developing fresh approaches to spark student interest in these critical fields.
Through this collaboration, Stellantis and PSC will focus on teacher training, skill-building, and creating a sustainable talent pipeline in Kedah. The initiative will target underserved communities, empowering students with the resources and opportunities to excel in STEM disciplines.
“At Stellantis, we are deeply committed to uplifting local communities through education,” said Daniel Gonzalez, Chief Operating Officer, ASEAN, Stellantis. “With a regional manufacturing plant in Gurun, we aim to act as a catalyst for STEM-related job opportunities in Kedah, preparing young minds for a future driven by technology and innovation. By working with the Penang Science Cluster, we want to foster capable teachers and build competencies among students to ensure Kedah becomes a thriving hub for innovation and socio-economic progress.”
This partnership aligns with Malaysia’s New Industrial Masterplan (NIMP) 2030, which emphasizes creating a highly skilled workforce through advancements in automation and technology. It also supports the Northern Corridor Economic Region’s (NCER) vision of transforming Kedah into a world-class economic and technology hub, shifting from traditional industries like agriculture and manufacturing to high-value sectors such as technology, aerospace, biotechnology, and advanced manufacturing.
Dato’ Ooi Peng Ee, CEO of Penang Science Cluster, highlighted the importance of STEM education in achieving these ambitious goals. “A strong foundation in STEM is vital for regional and national success,” he said. “This partnership with Stellantis marks a major milestone in strengthening STEM education in Kedah. By providing students with the right exposure and learning opportunities, we are sparking interest in these fields and preparing them for a future centered on innovation and technology. We believe this initiative will transform Kedah into a beacon of talent and innovation, leaving a lasting positive impact on the community.”
