The Volkswagen Golf has been on sale around the globe for 50 years and has been one of the most successful models under the Volkswagen brand. Over the past five decades, the Golf has served families big and small, across the world, and through multiple generations. To celebrate this significant milestone, Volkswagen Malaysia has introduced its own version of the Volkswagen Golf GTI Edition 50. This special edition comes with additional exterior and interior enhancements that the regular variant lacks. In this article, I will take a closer look at these enhancements to see if they make this a truly special edition of the Golf GTI.
For this special edition Golf GTI, the most obvious change you’ll notice is the black-colored rims. These rims feature a unique “Pretoria” design, which was previously available on the last-generation Golf R. Adding to its distinctive appearance, the center caps now remain upright, similar to Rolls-Royce models. Additionally, the valve caps on the wheels are stamped with a small Volkswagen logo. It’s worth noting that you should keep these valve caps safe whenever you replace the tires, as they might be hard to replace.
Beyond the rims, the Golf GTI Edition 50 boasts a sportier body kit that enhances the vehicle’s aggressive stance. This kit extends the front splitter, side skirts, and rear diffuser, giving the car a meaner look even when stationary. It also includes a larger roof-mounted spoiler to emphasize its dynamic design. To further distinguish this model, Volkswagen has added a sticker pack along the lower parts of the doors, offering a more distinctive look compared to the standard Golf GTI.
There are additional unique details scattered around the vehicle to make it even more special. For instance, a chrome “50” badge is fitted on both B-pillars, making it easy to identify this special edition from afar. The Edition 50 also comes with darker tints on the rear windows, providing a more premium appearance while shading rear passengers. However, these tints might feel a bit too dark in areas with limited lighting.
Inside, Volkswagen has included subtle but thoughtful touches for this special edition. The first thing you’ll notice upon opening the door is the Edition 50-branded door sills. This logo is also embroidered on the floor mats, which are not available on the standard GTI. Additionally, a “50” badge replaces the traditional GTI badge at the bottom of the steering wheel. Other than these enhancements, the interior remains largely similar to that of the regular Golf GTI.
Under the hood, the powertrain remains unchanged. The Edition 50 retains the same 2.0L turbocharged EA888 four-cylinder engine, producing 245 PS and 370 Nm of torque. It is paired with a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission, sending power to the front wheels. While the driving dynamics are identical to the standard GTI, Volkswagen could have made this edition more special by incorporating the upgrades found in the Golf GTI Clubsport. These enhancements, such as increased power, would have significantly boosted the model’s appeal, especially to enthusiasts.
If you’re interested in owning this limited-edition Golf GTI, it will cost approximately RM 269,012—an RM 15,000 premium over the standard model. However, this price includes the factory-installed body kit and special edition details, all covered under Volkswagen Malaysia’s warranty. For those who enjoy unique details and limited-edition exclusivity, the Edition 50 offers great value. On the other hand, if the extras don’t appeal to you, the standard Golf GTI remains an excellent choice and offers the same exceptional driving experience.
