Michelin is advancing its commitment to innovation and sustainability through groundbreaking technological developments. With a clear focus on addressing environmental challenges, Michelin remains on track to achieve its ambitious goal of producing tires made from 100% recycled and renewable materials by 2050.
Reflecting on the company’s progress, Manuel Fafian, President of Michelin East Asia and Oceania, stated: “As we close out the year, we are proud to highlight Michelin’s significant achievements in driving sustainability through innovation. Our vision of ‘Innovating for a Sustainable Future’ is being realized not just through words, but through tangible actions and impactful initiatives across Asia Pacific and beyond.”
Michelin’s latest advancements include incorporating sustainable raw materials, such as natural rubber and silica derived from rice husks sourced in Asia, into the tire manufacturing process. This innovation aligns with the increasing demand for higher-performing tires, especially as electric vehicles (EVs) reshape the mobility landscape. Given EVs’ unique demands—such as higher weight and torque—Michelin is developing longer-lasting tires that integrate renewable and recycled materials to meet these new challenges. By 2030, the company targets having 40% of its tire materials come from renewable sources, with full achievement of 100% by 2050.
A notable breakthrough includes Michelin’s specially homologated tires, which are composed of 45% bio-sourced and recycled materials for road use, and an impressive 71% for race tires. These eco-friendly products maintain the same high level of performance as their traditional counterparts, ensuring durability while paving the way for a greener tire industry.
Locally, Michelin Malaysia plays a pivotal role in advancing the country’s sustainability goals. By promoting eco-conscious tire technologies, Michelin aligns its efforts with Malaysia’s push for greener mobility and low-carbon economic policies.
Prichapakorn Dangrojana, Managing Director of Michelin Malaysia, Singapore, and Brunei, emphasized the company’s alignment with the nation’s sustainability agenda: “As Malaysia accelerates its shift toward sustainable mobility, Michelin is committed to supporting this journey through innovative solutions. Our eco-conscious tire technologies not only deliver exceptional performance made to last but also contribute to a greener, more sustainable future.”
Michelin’s advancements are a testament to the company’s dedication to balancing high performance with environmental responsibility, as it drives toward a future of sustainable mobility for generations to come.
