In a significant step towards promoting environmental sustainability, Proton recently partnered with MY Clean Beach, a local environmental NGO, to organize a beach cleanup at Pantai Batu Laut in Tanjong Sepat. Located along the Straits of Malacca and just a two-hour drive from Kuala Lumpur, the beach cleanup event reflects Proton’s commitment to corporate social responsibility (CSR).

The initiative brought together 42 dedicated volunteers from Proton management, Kelab Proton Edar, and MY Clean Beach. Their collective efforts focused on two primary areas: the mangrove region and the visitor-accessible sections of the beach. Over the course of the event, the team successfully removed 338.5 kilograms of waste. This included 263.95 kilograms of general trash, 38 kilograms of bulky items, 19.5 kilograms of plastic, 14 kilograms of glass, 3.5 kilograms of metal, 148 cigarette butts, and 46 plastic straws. These efforts not only restored the beach’s aesthetic appeal but also contributed to creating a healthier coastal ecosystem.

Pantai Batu Laut, renowned for its vibrant mangrove forests and serene waters, stands to benefit significantly from these cleanup efforts. Mangroves play a crucial role in protecting coastal environments, and the removal of harmful waste underscores the importance of safeguarding these ecosystems.

The event wasn’t just about cleaning up—it also aimed to raise awareness about environmental conservation and proper waste management. Volunteers gained insights into the impacts of plastic pollution and the need to protect marine life. MY Clean Beach, with its powerful tagline “My beach is local, and I own it. It’s part of me and my country,” continues to lead efforts in tackling plastic waste. To date, the NGO has removed over 16,817 kilograms of waste, engaged nearly 3,700 volunteers, and planted 485 trees in its ongoing conservation mission.

Proton’s collaboration with MY Clean Beach highlights the role corporations can play in fostering environmental stewardship. “By removing waste from Pantai Batu Laut, Proton has contributed to healthier ecosystems while fostering unity among our employees,” said Roslan Abdullah, CEO of Proton Edar. “As we expand our lineup with hybrid and EV models, it is imperative that we align our operations with environmental sustainability. Initiatives like this are a great way to start.”
