AFA Infrastructure and Development Sdn Bhd (AFA) has redefined its brand identity, marking a pivotal moment in Malaysia’s infrastructure evolution. With its recent acquisition of ANIH Berhad, AFA now manages two critical expressways: the Kuala Lumpur-Karak Expressway (KLK) and the East Coast Expressway 1 (LPT1). This move underscores the company’s dedication to enhancing transportation infrastructure in alignment with national development goals.

The rebranding introduces three specialized divisions:

  • AFA PRIME Berhad: The highway concessionaire overseeing the KL-Karak and LPT1 Expressways.
  • AFA Construction & Engineering Sdn Bhd: Experts in maintenance and engineering services for highways and related infrastructure.
  • AFA System & Services Sdn Bhd: Specializing in toll management and collections.

These divisions enable AFA to deliver comprehensive infrastructure solutions, contributing to Malaysia’s economic growth, job creation, and regional development. The company is targeting an annual revenue growth of 2%-3%, emphasizing its commitment to sustainable and efficient infrastructure.

To tackle congestion and enhance safety on one of Malaysia’s busiest highways, AFA is investing RM2.1 billion in the KL-Karak Widening Project. Scheduled to commence in January 2025 and span 48 months, the project will:

  • Expand from dual three-lanes to dual four-lanes, including a new two-lane tunnel from Gombak Toll Plaza to Genting Sempah.
  • Upgrade from dual two-lanes to dual three-lanes between Genting Sempah and Bentong Toll Plaza.
  • Introduce advanced safety measures like slope stabilization, upgraded traffic management systems, and wider shoulders for improved incident management.

This initiative aims to improve travel efficiency, reduce accidents, and stimulate economic activity along the East Coast corridor.

To address recurring flooding challenges on the LPT1 Expressway, AFA has allocated RM200 million for a Flood Mitigation Project, set for completion in December 2028. Key enhancements include:

  • Upgraded drainage systems to manage higher water volumes.
  • Strengthened and extended culverts for better water flow.
  • Elevating roads in flood-prone areas to ensure accessibility.
  • Stabilizing slopes and embankments to prevent erosion and landslides.
  • Implementing vegetation management to minimize water runoff.

AFA is integrating sustainability into its operations, aligning with Malaysia’s National Energy Transition Roadmap (NETR) and net-zero emissions goals by 2050. Planned initiatives include:

  • Solar panel installations at rest areas to harness renewable energy.
  • Deployment of electric vehicle (EV) charging stations along expressways.
  • Adoption of eco-friendly construction materials to minimize environmental impact.

Additionally, AFA is actively monitoring its carbon footprint, showcasing its dedication to environmental transparency and stewardship.

Tan Sri Azmil Khalili Khalid, Chairman of AFA Group, emphasized the company’s unified mission to advance Malaysia’s connectivity and uplift communities. He stated: “Through projects like the KL-Karak Widening and LPT1 Flood Mitigation, we are addressing immediate infrastructure needs while laying a foundation for a resilient transportation network. Our approach prioritizes user safety, ecosystem sustainability, and innovation, setting new benchmarks for infrastructure development.”

By focusing on connectivity, sustainability, and community impact, AFA aims to play a transformative role in Malaysia’s growth and modernization.
