Proton has surpassed the 100,000-unit sales milestone for the sixth consecutive year, with 101,489 units sold year-to-date (YTD). The company recorded a total of 12,690 units (domestic and export) sold in August, securing its second place in the overall national automotive sales ranking, with a projected market share of 19%.
The month of August saw strong sales for the Proton X50, marking its second consecutive month of robust performance. The company also witnessed a significant increase in export sales, which doubled compared to July, driven by an all-time high in sales volume in Brunei. The total industry volume (TIV) for the Malaysian automotive market grew by an estimated 1.3% month-on-month to approximately 72,678 units in August, with a YTD total of around 534,766 units—an increase of 6.2% over 2023.
The 2024 Proton X50, launched on June 4 this year, continues to lead its segment with several refinements to maintain its competitive edge against B-segment SUV rivals. The model delivered 2,440 units in August, marking the third time it surpassed 2,000 units in monthly sales this year. The YTD sales for the Proton X50 now stand at 15,229 units, making it the most popular SUV in PROTON’s lineup.
After a record-breaking 7,855 units sold in July, the Proton Saga achieved sales of 6,211 units in August, bringing its YTD total to 48,904 units, a 6.7% increase over 2023. Other Proton sedans also showed strong sales numbers: the C-segment Proton S70 sold 1,205 units in August for a YTD total of 13,755 units, while the B-segment Proton Persona saw 1,452 units sold, pushing its YTD total to 13,116 units.
In the SUV segment, the flagship Proton X90 continued to lead its category with 241 units delivered in August, bringing its YTD total to 2,507 units. The Proton Iriz, a B-segment hatchback, sold 403 units in August, contributing to a YTD total of 3,719 units.
Roslan Abdullah, Chief Executive Officer of Proton Edar, expressed optimism about the future of Malaysia’s automotive industry, citing the resilient domestic economy and projected GDP growth of 4% to 5%. “Proton supports the Malaysian Automotive Association’s (MAA) decision to increase the full-year TIV projection to 765,000 units. Our sales performance reflects a buoyant market, as we have already exceeded 100,000 units for the sixth consecutive year, with four months remaining in 2024,” he stated.
Roslan also highlighted the positive market response to Proton’s latest updated models despite the increased competition from new brands. He attributed this success to the effectiveness of recent enhancements and the company’s extensive network of 3S/4S outlets that cater to customer needs.
After a slow July, Proton’s export sales have shown a steady increase, with the company actively working to expand its brand presence in existing export markets. August marked a record month for Brunei, with 120 units sold, the highest monthly sales ever achieved in the country. The Proton Saga led export sales with 140 units shipped in August, maintaining its position as the best-selling export model since February. Other models also experienced growth, bringing the cumulative export sales to 2,110 units since January.
Reflecting on the company’s export performance, Roslan Abdullah added, “Proton has a long-standing relationship with Bruneian car buyers, dating back to the original Proton Saga. The brand’s rejuvenation in Brunei, supported by the efforts of Pad Motors Proton Brunei and our latest range of intelligent models, has led to record sales in August.”
