UMW Toyota Motor is set to kick off the 7th edition of the Toyota Gazoo Racing Festival, featuring the latest Vios in the thrilling Vios one-make series. This season consists of three rounds, totaling six individual races, all held at the Petronas Sepang International Circuit starting in April.
With RM 630,000 in prize money up for grabs, the new generation Vios will be transformed into race cars, pushed to their limits across three different classes: the Sporting Class for amateurs and gentlemen racers, the Super Sporting Class for professionals, and the TGR Rookie Class.
The Toyota Vios Challenge’s opening round will run concurrently with the Malaysia Championship Series (MCS) from 9-11 August. Round 2 is scheduled for 27-29 September 2024, marking the return of the independently organized Toyota Gazoo Racing Festival. Fans, race enthusiasts, and the public can enjoy live broadcasts of the races. Since its inception in 2017, the Toyota Vios Challenge has attracted almost 30 million spectators, becoming the most-watched local racing series. The one-make series format ensures fair play, emphasizing skill, racecraft, and technical preparation.
The Super Sporting Class will see the return of former three-time overall champion Tengku Djan Ley Tengku Mahaleel, defending champion Mitchell Cheah, and notable Malaysian racers Eddie Lew, William Ho, Tom Goh, and Freddie Ang. Young drivers Putera Adam, brothers Naquib and Nabil Azlan, Bradley Benedict, Ady Rahimy, and India’s Aman Nagdev will also compete.
The Sporting Class will feature familiar names like Dato’ Dr. Ken Foo, Kenneth Koh, Dannies Ng, Shafiq Samsudin, Ricky Tan, and Lim Chun Beng. New participants include Elson Lew, Amirul Haikal, Timothy Yeo, Ashen Arumugan, Panithan Rakpaibulsombut from Thailand, and Singaporean Daniel Inosuke Ooi.
The TGR Rookie Class will welcome the fourth intake of young drivers from the Gazoo Racing Young Talent Development Program. This program has graduated 24 young drivers, offering them opportunities in saloon car racing. This year’s rookies include 22-year-old Brandon Ho, 18-year-old Adam Mikail, 22-year-old Amirul Afiq, 17-year-old Audrey Leong, 21-year-old Raja Amirul, and 19-year-old Kingston Tan.
A highlight of Season 7 is racing the latest generation Toyota Vios. Equipped with a 1.5-litre engine and a five-speed manual transmission, the new Vios features a more rigid and stable platform and revised aerodynamics, making it more responsive and faster. This model’s introduction underscores UMW Toyota Motor’s commitment to the Toyota Vios Challenge series for the next four seasons.
