Entering its 39th consecutive year of production, the Proton Saga, Malaysia’s first-ever national car, achieved a significant milestone last month with 7,855 units sold—marking its best single-month sales since October 2013. Year-to-date (YTD) sales for the iconic model have also seen an 8.8% growth, reaching 42,693 units. This upward trend sets the stage for a promising sales year ahead for Proton’s flagship vehicle.
Since the Proton Saga first rolled off the production lines on 9 July 1985, it has become a symbol of Malaysian automotive success, surpassing the remarkable 2 million sales mark this year. As Proton’s most popular model, the Saga has continued to stand out as a reliable, affordable option for consumers, proving its relevance and appeal to the Malaysian market for over three decades.
As the demand for the Proton Saga remains strong, PROTON is working closely with its strategic partner, Zhejiang Geely Holding Ltd (Geely), to enhance the model’s platform. The collaboration between the two companies has been ongoing for years and was recently bolstered by the establishment of the PROTON R&D Centre in China in April this year. This joint effort is set to take PROTON’s in-house capabilities to new heights, combining the expertise of PROTON’s engineering team with Geely’s vast resources.
These collaborations will allow PROTON to upgrade its homegrown models by tapping into Geely’s global footprint while maintaining the leadership of PROTON’s R&D engineers in Malaysia. This synergy strengthens PROTON’s ability to innovate and compete on an international scale.
In conjunction with Malaysia’s National Day, PROTON has launched the “SAGA-MERDEKA EASY TO OWN” campaign, offering Malaysians a chance to own the iconic Proton Saga with special incentives throughout August. As part of the promotion, customers can enjoy a cash rebate of RM500 on any Proton Saga model. Additionally, Maybank customers are eligible for an extra RM200 rebate upon presenting a promotional message from the bank at participating Proton dealerships. This exclusive offer is available for walk-in bookings on the weekends of August 10 and 17.
