Round 2 of the MSF Superturismo delivered an exhilarating Saturday night of racing at the Petronas Sepang International Circuit on June 1, 2024. The event saw 160 race cars and over 200 drivers across 14 classes take on the South Track (2.609km), creating intense and close racing action under floodlights.

The revival of the “Saturday Night Fever” racing phenomenon, last held in 2015, attracted nearly 2,000 spectators. The event showcased the best in Malaysian circuit racing, especially in the five premier classes: Super Series Unlimited, Vision-HKS Super Touring, Vision-HKS GT86 x BRZ Racing Cup, Super Production, and Rennplatz Standard Production. Each race required a mandatory 2-minute pit stop for a driver change.

MSF Superturismo Principal Adian Yein Khalid remarked, “The vibe both on and off the track was extraordinary. We’re glad to bring back Saturday Night Fever racing after 10 years. Weather conditions added to the excitement, with drivers facing dry, wet, and damp conditions due to late afternoon rain.”

The MSF Super Series race was a highlight, featuring top drivers and cars. Faidzil Alang and Tung Kah Soon in a modified Honda Civic EG6 dominated the 22-lap race, finishing almost a minute ahead of their nearest rival in the Super Series Unlimited class. Putera Mohd Faiz in a Mitsubishi Evolution III and Lim Tze Chien in a Honda Integra DC5 took second and third places, respectively.

Faidzil Alang commented, “The conditions were extremely tricky, with varying track conditions throughout the day. After the mandatory pit stop, it was all about focus and navigating the traffic safely.”

In the Vision-HKS Super Touring division, Mohamed Hafez Kamarudin secured his second consecutive victory in a Toyota GR Yaris, finishing 6.7 seconds ahead of Indonesian driver Umar Abdullah in a Honda Civic FD2R. Jonathan Lee Jiahui in a Honda Integra DC5 claimed third place.

Mohamed Hafez noted, “We had a slight coolant pressure issue, but it didn’t affect the coolant temperature. Overall, the car was well-prepared, and I’m pleased with the result.”

The Vision-HKS GT86 x BRZ Racing Cup saw Rennplatz Racing’s Ng Teck Ming achieving a dominant victory, finishing 50 seconds ahead of Syed Rizal and Fahrizal Hasan from Fawster SMRT. Muhd Khairul Nizam Yaacob finished third, a lap behind. This marked Ng’s second consecutive race win in two rounds.

In the Super Production class, Boy Soh delivered a surprise win in a Perodua Myvi, finishing just 2 seconds ahead of Roni Risman in a Proton Satria Neo. Thang Jiun Sheng, also in a Proton Satria Neo, finished third, 31 seconds adrift.

The Rennplatz Standard Production class saw Hayden Haikal and Aiman Asyraaf dominate in their Honda Fit GK5 RS, finishing 16 seconds ahead of Ng Chong Chin. Stewart Hine secured third place, 13 seconds behind. The results mean both Ng and the pair of Hayden and Aiman have one race victory and a second-place finish after two rounds.

In the Super 1800 class, Amer Harris in a Proton Satria crushed the competition, finishing with a 1 minute and 6-second lead. Foo Yung Chieh and Ng Teck Ming in a Honda Civic EG6 and Loke Chee Fah in a Honda Civic EJ took second and third places, respectively.

Round 3 of the MSF Superturismo will continue on July 21, this time on the North Track at the Petronas Sepang International Circuit.
