Proton concluded March and the initial quarter of 2024 on a high note, boasting robust sales figures in both domestic and export markets. The quarter witnessed a total of 39,150 units sold, including 12,666 domestic and export sales, marking a significant achievement for the company. Export sales surged by 63% compared to the previous year, indicating a growing international demand for Proton vehicles.
Amidst an overall growth trend in the Malaysian automotive market, Proton continues to hold a strong position. The total-industry-volume (TIV) for the Malaysian automotive sector is estimated at 202,492 units for the first three months of 2024, reflecting a 5.1% increase. Proton’s market share stands at an estimated 19.3%, making it the second-highest among all automotive brands.
In the face of a competitive market landscape and evolving consumer preferences, Proton’s focus on providing reliable, enjoyable, and feature-rich vehicles at affordable prices remains pivotal. The Proton Saga, a cornerstone of the company’s offerings, witnessed exceptional performance in the first quarter of 2024, with 18,247 units sold. Notably, March alone accounted for 5,906 units, including 93 units for export, positioning the Saga as a strong contender in the A-segment sedan market.
The introduction of the Proton S70 has diversified Proton’s market reach, capturing significant consumer interest. March sales reached 2,072 units, including 35 units for export, totaling 5,828 units for the quarter. While production capacity aligns with growing demand, the S70 has emerged as the second best-selling model within the Proton lineup, particularly in the competitive C-segment sedan market.
Proton’s presence in the SUV segment remains robust, with three models catering to varying consumer preferences. The Proton X50 achieved 1,626 units in sales, while the Proton X70 experienced a notable 35.5% increase from the previous month, with 603 units sold. The company’s venture into the NEV (New Energy Vehicle) market with the Proton X90 continues to garner attention, with 326 units delivered to customers in March, maintaining a strong position in the D-segment SUV market.
The Proton Persona and Proton Iriz also contributed to Proton’s sales momentum, with the former selling 1,665 units in March and totalling 5,370 units for the quarter, solidifying its position as the second most popular B-segment sedan in Malaysia. Meanwhile, the Proton Iriz achieved 468 units in March and 1,534 units for the quarter, maintaining its standing as the fourth most popular hatchback in its segment.
In an effort to expand its global footprint, Proton made significant strides in international markets. Ansa Motors, the importer and distributor for Proton in Trinidad and Tobago, introduced the Proton X50 and Proton X90 to the local market on March 13th. Jerome Borde, Head of Regional Business at Ansa Motors, commended Proton for its commitment to safety, reliability, and competitive pricing, highlighting the brand’s appeal in the Trinidadian automotive market.
