Proton’s groundbreaking solar power initiative in Tanjong Malim has secured the prestigious top spot in the Renewable Energy category of the National Energy Awards (NEA) 2023. This initiative boasts the largest parking lot bi-facial solar panel facility in Malaysia, surpassing its sustainability goals set two years ago.
Officially recognized by Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof at the NEA ceremony held on March 8th, this initiative highlights Proton’s commitment to sustainable energy practices aligned with Malaysia’s ambition to achieve net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.
Led by the Ministry of Energy Transition and Water Transformation, the NEA celebrates organizations embracing sustainable energy concepts. The event features four categories: Energy Management, Energy Efficient Building, Renewable Energy, and Special Awards, with cash prizes awarded to winners and runners-up.
Since its launch in May 2021, the bi-facial solar panels, complemented by rooftop solar panels, have significantly reduced the plant’s CO2 emissions by 32,406 tonnes, surpassing the initial forecast target of 11,536 tonnes annually. This reduction is equivalent to offsetting emissions from nearly 893,000 trees, benefiting the Tanjung Malim community and ecosystem.
To date, the adoption of renewable energy has generated 45.78 GWh and slashed the facility’s electricity costs by 11% in 2023, resulting in savings exceeding RM10 million since inception. This underscores Proton’s unwavering dedication to fostering a greener operational environment.
Constructed and managed by Pekat Group and its associate MFP Solar, the parking lot solar panel facility covers 23.4 acres and accommodates 2,880 newly produced cars before distribution to dealers nationwide.
Since 2015, Proton has been committed to reducing its carbon footprint through initiatives like the Proton Green Wheel and Green Initiatives. These initiatives, comprising five phases, including Energy Management Systems, Energy Efficiency measures, Waste and Water Management, and renewable energy adoption, have collectively saved RM20 million, equivalent to 55,000 MWh savings, and over 40,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions.
Looking ahead, Proton is embarking on a 10-year Energy Roadmap from 2020 onwards. This roadmap includes plans for expanding solar photovoltaic (PV) systems, implementing battery energy storage systems, district cooling systems, and waste heat recovery projects. These endeavors align with Malaysia’s objectives to reduce carbon emissions by 45% in 2025 and 60% in 2035.
