UMW Toyota Motor Sdn Bhd (UMWT) recently launched its Beyond Zero initiative, aligning with Toyota’s global pursuit of Carbon Neutrality by 2050. The event, held from today until 28 February at Technology Park Malaysia, showcases transformative initiatives reflecting the brand’s commitment to sustainable and eco-friendly practices.

The event signifies the company’s profound promise to lead towards a sustainable and interconnected future, transcending conventional automotive concepts. It envisions a society where individuals prioritize happiness through choices aligned with their values and lifestyles, termed the multiple pathway approach towards Carbon Neutrality.

UMWT’s commitment to aligning its practices with broader national and global efforts to combat climate change and foster sustainable development was highlighted. The company’s multi-pathway approach to carbon neutrality offers various electrification solutions tailored to meet the unique needs of customers and regions, ensuring inclusivity in the journey towards Zero Carbon Dioxide emissions.

The Beyond Zero event symbolically launched with various electrified technologies, including Hybrid Electric Vehicles, Battery Electric Vehicles, and Fuel Cell Electric Vehicles. These vehicles showcase advanced technologies and design elements aimed at reducing environmental impact, embodying the pillar of mass electrification.

UMWT’s Hybrid Electric Vehicles, with a significant presence in the Malaysian market since 2009, have demonstrated reliability and decarbonization effects, equivalent to planting 500K trees. Additionally, UMWT presented Battery Electric Vehicles and Fuel Cell Electric Vehicles for the first time, including environmentally friendly models designed for urban efficiency

Fuel Cell Electric Vehicles, such as the Toyota Mirai, combine technological innovation with sleek design and dynamic performance, providing a zero-emission journey powered by hydrogen and oxygen. The event also highlighted the SORA bus, powered by hydrogen fuel cells, demonstrating cleaner and more sustainable automotive options, especially for commercial purposes.

Toyota’s three-decade investment in fuel cell technology has resulted in hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicles, offering advantages in refueling time and driving distance, while providing a zero-emission journey.

During the event, Toyota Malaysia allowed us to test drive 3 different vehicles, and experience 2 fuel cell commercial vehicles. For the test drive vehicles, Toyota Malaysia brought out the Toyota Camry HEV, Toyota BZ4X, and the Toyota HILUX FCEV Concept. This is a very interesting experience, especially driving the FCEV. This technology is really new here in Malaysia, with not many of this type of vehicle currently on the road. But what really surprises me is the Toyota Hilux FCEV and the FCEV trucks. These vehicles feel very effortless for commercial vehicles, greatly reducing fatigue for drivers. And this is a good look to the future for these vehicles.

UMWT’s presentation emphasized a comprehensive range of innovative, eco-friendly technologies and models, aligned with the company’s commitment to sustainable mobility solutions. The Beyond Zero event, open from 20 to 28 February 2024, aims to raise awareness and encourage participation in sustainability initiatives.

From hybrid electric vehicles to hydrogen fuel cell technology, the Beyond Zero concept underscores Toyota’s dedication to innovation while fostering a green, low-carbon ecosystem for Malaysian citizens. It marks a significant milestone in UMW Toyota Motor’s journey towards sustainable mobility, aiming to achieve zero negative impacts on people and the environment, while creating greater value for society in the future.
