In a significant stride towards clean energy advancement, Gentari Sdn Bhd and its subsidiary Gentari Hydrogen Sdn Bhd, have inked a crucial Heads of Agreement (HOA) with SEDC Energy Sdn Bhd (SEDCE), a subsidiary of the Sarawak Economic Development Corporation. The agreement sets the stage for the collaborative establishment of the Sarawak H2 Hub, a centralized hydrogen production facility in Bintulu, Sarawak.
The exchange of this pivotal document took place at the esteemed Borneo Energy Transition Conference (BETC2024) in Kuching, witnessed by Sarawak’s Premier, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Johari Tun Abang Haji Openg. This initiative aligns with the Sarawak government’s vision of fostering a new energy landscape emphasizing cleaner energy utilization, with SEDCE spearheading efforts to inaugurate the new energy ecosystem.
The Sarawak H2 Hub, envisaged as a global-scale hydrogen production center, aims to be the primary supplier of green hydrogen for downstream facilities in the Bintulu division. A joint venture between Gentari and SEDCE will oversee operations, including the optimization of hydrogen production projects in the region.
Michèle Azalbert, Chief Hydrogen Officer at Gentari, emphasized Malaysia’s potential as a clean hydrogen hub within ASEAN, particularly highlighting Sarawak’s abundant sustainable resources. She articulated Gentari’s commitment to fostering collaborations, such as with SEDC Energy, to cultivate the local hydrogen economy, generating economic value for the state and positioning Malaysia as a hydrogen export hub.
Sarawak, with its sights set on becoming a commercial hydrogen producer by 2027, aims to transition into a hydrogen-based economy. Robert Hardin, CEO of SEDCE, underscored the significance of the partnership in propelling developments and attracting investments, especially in the burgeoning new energy sector. He emphasized the pivotal role of hydrogen in the energy transition, aligning with Sarawak’s contribution to the National Energy Transition Roadmap.
The alliance between Gentari and SEDC Energy builds upon a prior Strategic Collaboration Agreement, reflecting their shared commitment to developing integrated clean energy solutions and contributing to policy and regulatory frameworks in Sarawak.
