FedEx Express recently started its inaugural cross-border delivery trial from Malaysia to Singapore utilizing an electric vehicle (EV). This move underscores FedEx’s ongoing commitment to minimizing its carbon footprint and championing sustainable logistics practices.

The journey will be undertaken by a ‘Maxus eDeliver 7’ from a FedEx hub in Shah Alam to a facility at Changi Airport in Singapore, spanning a distance of 406 kilometers. The anticipated reduction in tailpipe CO2 emissions for this trial is estimated to be around 100 kilograms compared to conventional diesel-powered vans.

This initiative serves as an initial assessment of operational feasibility for future cross-border pickup and delivery operations. The insights garnered will play a crucial role in shaping the future direction of FedEx’s operations, not only contributing to environmental preservation but also enhancing fleet efficiency and customer service excellence.

Kawal Preet, President of the Asia Pacific, Middle East, and Africa region at FedEx, emphasized the strategic imperative of incorporating sustainability into ground operations, highlighting the significance of the cross-border trial in advancing FedEx’s regional fleet electrification program in alignment with customer preferences for eco-friendly time-definite delivery solutions.

This trial signifies a significant milestone for FedEx as it progresses toward its objective of transitioning its entire global pickup and delivery fleet to zero-emission electric vehicles by 2040, following a phased approach. In May 2023, FedEx introduced two EVs to its Malaysian fleet for parcel pickup and delivery operations within the Klang Valley.

Tien Long Woon, Managing Director of FedEx Express Malaysia, hailed the cross-border endeavor with a zero-tailpipe emissions vehicle as a groundbreaking endeavor that transcends logistical achievements, representing a bold stride toward reshaping industry standards. FedEx remains steadfast in its commitment to innovation and technology utilization to enhance operational efficiency and provide sustainable service to its Malaysian clientele.

The company also unveiled a cloud-based carbon emissions reporting tool, FedEx® Sustainability Insights, offering Malaysian customers access to historical emissions data on their shipments within the FedEx network. This empowers customers to make informed decisions regarding their shipping strategies, thereby reducing their environmental impact.
