When BMW Malaysia introduced its electric vehicle lineup in Malaysia, one standout model was the BMW iX3. Merging the practicality of the BMW X3 with an electric powertrain, the iX3 presented a compelling electric driving experience. Recently, I had the opportunity to test drive BMW Malaysia’s all-electric iX3, marking my inaugural experience with a BMW electric vehicle.

Given its foundation on the X3, the iX3 retains the appealing aesthetics of its traditional counterpart. Sporting the latest X3 design, the iX3 features distinctive BMW i touches, including a deep blue paint color with electric blue accents, creating an elegant appearance whether under the bright sun or against the night backdrop.

Positioned as the highest-specified BMW X3 variant in the Malaysian market, the iX3 boasts advanced features such as BMW laser light technology, full LED tail lights, and M-specific 20-inch rims, enhancing its sporty allure. The interior, while adopting the older BMW design, exudes timelessness. The iX3 I tested featured a black interior with electric blue highlights, and customers can opt for a Mocha color interior. The spacious cabin is further illuminated by a large panoramic sunroof.

Inside, the iX3 houses a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and an equally sized infotainment system, running on the older BMW iDrive 7.0 operating system. However, the system has been updated to include wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, seamlessly integrating with navigation apps like Waze. The iX3 M Sport variant is equipped with a premium 16-speaker 464 Watts Harman Kardon sound system, delivering an enjoyable auditory experience for all occupants.

The driver’s seat offers a comfortable and supportive experience, despite the slightly elevated SUV seating position. Rear passengers enjoy ample legroom, reclinable seats, and rear AC vents for added comfort. The iX3’s trunk, with a capacity of 510L, proves versatile and accessible through the automatic tailgate.

Under the hood, the iX3 features a single electric motor at the rear, making it a rear-wheel-drive vehicle. Generating 286 hp and 400 Nm of peak torque, the iX3 is equipped with a 73.8 kWh battery, providing an estimated range of 460 km. Accelerating from 0-100 km/h in 6.8 seconds, it achieves a top speed of 180 km/h.

Compared to other electric SUVs like the Volvo XC40, the iX3’s acceleration is more gradual, providing a smooth and pleasant driving experience. The sound, tuned by renowned composer Hans Zimmer, adds to the overall driving enjoyment. Charging capabilities, reaching up to 150 kW, contribute to the iX3’s practicality for everyday use.

On a full charge, the iX3 displays approximately 320 km of available travel distance, though real-world driving experiences suggest it can cover at least 400 km comfortably. The well-tuned suspension minimizes body roll in corners without sacrificing comfort, and the adaptive regenerative brakes enhance efficiency during highway cruising.

Equipped with a comprehensive set of safety and driver assistance features, including Adaptive Cruise Control and Emergency Stop Assistant, the iX3 aligns with the modern standard for EVs. Priced at RM 322,800.00, the iX3 offers a compelling alternative for those seeking an X3 with electric capabilities, provided charging convenience is not a primary concern. The iX3 stands out as a well-rounded electric vehicle that closely mirrors the driving experience of a traditional ICE vehicle.
