As the year comes to an end, Perodua also recently concluded the Asian Compact Sedan Design Challenge 2023 (ACSDC 2023) in Malaysia, capturing the attention of design enthusiasts and automotive aficionados alike. This event is was organize by Perodua in collaboration with the Malaysia Design Council (MRM), attracted about 93 entries from seven diverse countries to submit their design for the next generation compact sedan.

Dato’ Sri Zainal Abidin Ahmad, President, and Chief Executive Officer of Perodua expressed enthusiasm about the diverse participation, considering Perodua’s and MRM’s limited presence outside Malaysia. The entries hailed from Indonesia, Japan, Philippines, Singapore, Iran, Japan, India, and Malaysia, reflecting a rich tapestry of creative perspectives.

The professional category witnessed Kenny Chan from Malaysia claiming the championship with his avant-garde “Payung” concept car. Muhamad Zamuren Musa, the chief of judges, commended the dynamic design proportions, fastback silhouette, and well-balanced body character, making it stand out among the competition. Philip Samuel Tandio from Indonesia secured the 1st runner-up position with his “Out Ride” concept, while Muhammad Izhar Che Shukarno’s “Fastback” earned the accolade of second runner-up.

In the student category, Bryan Teh Yea Quan from Asia Pacific University (APU), Malaysia, emerged as the champion with his innovative take on a sporty sedan. Alfred Han Wen Hao from Universiti Malaysia Kelantan (UMK), Malaysia, claimed the first runner-up position, and Muhammad Amin Othman from Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM), Malaysia, secured the second runner-up spot.

Dato’ Sri Zainal highlighted the competition’s significance for Perodua, emphasizing its role in understanding the varied perceptions of sedans across different countries. He noted that while Malaysians view sedans as practical vehicles, other nations may perceive them as status symbols. The competition serves as a platform to blend these diverse ideas into a unified concept.

MRM’s Director, Husaini Ismail, underscored the broader impact of the competition, stating that it not only provides a platform for designers to showcase their talents but also exposes them to a myriad of design philosophies from around the world. The ACSDC 2023 stands as a testament to the collaborative spirit driving innovation in the Asian automotive design landscape.
