Volkswagen Malaysia has responded to customer feedback on the Golf GTi, addressing concerns about feature removals for price competitiveness. Initially, certain elements were omitted, leading some owners to express a willingness to pay more for enhanced features. Responding to this feedback, Volkswagen Malaysia decided to elevate the specification level of the Volkswagen Golf GTi, accompanied by a corresponding increase in price. This review aims to assess whether these added features contribute to making the Golf GTi a more attractive vehicle.
While the exterior largely retains its original design, the updated model introduces subtle enhancements. Notably, the iconic checkered flag fog lights, previously missing, now adorn the front of the car, offering a distinctive touch exclusive to the Golf GTi. Additionally, the wing mirrors have been upgraded to electrically foldable ones, restoring a premium feature omitted in the previous model.
Upon entering the vehicle, minor updates are apparent, maintaining the overall look of the interior. Notable changes include the GTI logo embossed on the front seats and the inclusion of a wireless charger, which was absent in the earlier version. While these updates may be considered minor, they could be appreciated by those who value such details.
The most significant update lies in the incorporation of Advanced Driving Assistance Systems (ADAS). The addition of ADAS prompts slight alterations to the instrument cluster graphics, and the airbag count has been increased to seven, up from six in the previous model. While the ADAS may not be essential for all drivers, these enhancements undoubtedly make the Golf GTI even more appealing, albeit with a higher price tag.
In terms of safety, the Golf GTI boasts a comprehensive set of features, including seven airbags, Electronic Stability Control (ESC), Electronic Differential Lock (EDL), and Traction Control (ASR). The ADAS package encompasses Travel Assist with Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), Side Assist, Rear Cross Traffic Alert, Front Assist, Emergency Assist, Lane Assist, Automatic Post-Collision Braking System, and a Driver Alert system with fatigue detection.
Under the hood, the powertrain remains unchanged, featuring the same 2.0L turbocharged engine producing 242 hp and 370 Nm of torque. The performance figures, including a 0-100 km/h time of 6.3 seconds and a top speed of 250 km/h, remain consistent. The driving experience remains exhilarating, making the Golf GTI an enjoyable vehicle for daily commutes or weekend adventures.
Despite the increased price of RM 246,012.00, the Golf GTI still stands out as an affordable performance-oriented vehicle with added appeal. For those seeking a versatile car that caters to daily needs while satisfying the desires of a car enthusiast, the Golf GTI remains a compelling choice.
