In Malaysia, Mercedes Benz Malaysia locally assembles its largest SUV, the GLE SUV. While the GLE has been available for some time now, it competes with other top-tier SUVs like the X5 and XC90. These spacious SUVs cater to affluent families who prefer not to venture into the MPV territory but still require a 7-seater vehicle. In this review, I’ll delve into the Mercedes Benz GLE 450, examining its suitability as a 7-seater.
Mercedes Benz designers have bestowed the GLE with a muscular and imposing appearance that befits its considerable size. This bold styling ensures that the SUV appears larger than life. As is common in contemporary vehicle design, the GLE features a substantial front grille, designed to facilitate the entry of ample cooling air into the engine bay. This grille adopts a 3D pattern and pairs seamlessly with the sporty front bumper, a part of the AMG line package. Flanking this colossal grille are two full matrix LED headlights, though, in comparison, they may appear somewhat diminutive when placed adjacent to the grille.
At the rear, you’ll recognize the familiar Mercedes Benz design, especially in the LED taillights, which bear a resemblance to those found in the GLC and, to some extent, the GLA. The rear bumper shares similarities as well, featuring a chrome centerpiece that unites both exhaust outlets. Despite the GLE’s considerable height, Mercedes Benz Malaysia has thoughtfully added aluminum side steps to facilitate ingress and egress. Additionally, the GLE is equipped with staggered rims and tires, with 275/45 R21 tires in the front and 315/40 R21 tires in the rear, contributing to the vehicle’s overall presence.
Within the GLE’s cabin, you’ll encounter a dashboard that will feel familiar to anyone who has experienced a Mercedes Benz. Dominating the dashboard are two expansive 12.3-inch screens, serving as the instrument cluster and infotainment display. It’s worth noting that this interior design, while functional, is starting to show its age compared to newer Mercedes Benz models. To maintain a comfortable cabin temperature, the SUV boasts up to 10 AC vents, evenly distributed between the front and rear seats.
Regarding the infotainment system, it’s recognizable for anyone who has driven a Mercedes Benz, yet it’s worth mentioning that this is an older generation MBUX system. While it still includes Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, the connection remains wired. As a premium offering, the GLE also comes equipped with a 13-speaker, 590-watt Burmeister sound system, delivering a top-notch in-car entertainment experience.
One noteworthy aspect of the GLE’s interior is the center cup holder, a feature not commonly found in many vehicles, adding a unique touch. Adjacent to the cup holder, there’s a wireless charger to keep your devices powered if they support wireless charging. Additionally, the center console provides a switch for adjusting the vehicle’s height through the Airmatic suspension. To illuminate the spacious cabin, a panoramic sunroof extends all the way to the rear seats.
When seated in the driver’s position, the GLE offers a relatively high seating position, typical for a large SUV. The driver’s seat is notably comfortable, with robust side bolsters and ample adjustment options. Ergonomics are well thought out, and all buttons and switches are within easy reach.
Moving to the second-row seats, it becomes apparent that this area is designed with passenger comfort in mind. There’s generous legroom and headroom, and the seats can be electronically adjusted to suit rear passengers’ preferences. A highlight of the rear seats is the additional thigh support, enhancing comfort in the second row. As mentioned earlier, the GLE boasts 10 AC vents, with four dedicated to the second-row passengers. Second-row occupants also have access to two USB-C ports for device charging. Furthermore, both rear doors feature electric sun shades to shield passengers from sunlight when needed.
But the GLE doesn’t stop at the second row; it also features a third-row seat. It’s worth noting that the third-row seats are better suited for children, as the seat backs are quite upright, and entering and exiting these seats may require some effort, as is typical for 3-row SUVs. However, the second-row seats can be conveniently moved out of the way with the press of a button, although the electric motor may take a moment to complete the adjustment. Third-row passengers also have access to two USB-C charging ports and two cup holders for added convenience.
With all seats in their upright position, the GLE’s cargo space is somewhat limited. To maximize storage, most families are likely to fold down the third-row seats, providing a substantial 630 liters of cargo space. For even more room, the second-row seats can be folded down, creating a vast cargo area. The convenience of electronic seat folding, including the ability to raise the seats, is a characteristic often found in luxury SUVs.
In previous iterations, the GLE was powered by a V6 engine. However, the current generation is equipped with an inline-6 turbocharged engine, mated to a 9-speed automatic transmission. Power is distributed to all four wheels through the 4Matic all-wheel-drive system. This engine generates 367 horsepower at 5,500 rpm and peak torque of 500 Nm from 1,600 rpm onward. The GLE can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in a swift 5.7 seconds, reaching a top speed of 250 km/h.
In terms of performance, this robust engine effectively propels the substantial vehicle, even at an enthusiastic pace. The substantial low-end torque provides a pleasant driving experience in city traffic, as the engine doesn’t need to rev excessively. However, the all-wheel-drive system and the vehicle’s weight do reduce some of the engine’s power. An additional advantage of this powertrain is the smooth 9-speed automatic transmission, with seamless gear changes. The inline-6 engine also exhibits a refined and smooth performance. Despite being a 6-cylinder turbocharged engine, I achieved an average fuel economy of 11.7 liters per 100 kilometers after driving 700 kilometers.
When it comes to the ride, the air suspension effectively absorbs road imperfections, isolating the cabin from rough road surfaces. Even in Sport mode, the suspension maintains a comfortable ride, while the air suspension minimizes body roll during cornering, though some roll is still noticeable. The GLE is equipped with a direct steering wheel, but drivers need to consider the vehicle’s weight. Swift directional changes may require a bit more effort. The all-wheel-drive system significantly enhances cornering grip.
To bring this sizable vehicle to a stop, the all-wheel disc brakes provide the necessary stopping power. However, the brake pedal’s biting point is on the deeper side, and a higher biting point would instill more confidence in the driver during braking. In terms of safety, the GLE is well-equipped with modern Advanced Driver Assistance Systems, including seven airbags, Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC, Adaptive Highbeam Assist Plus, and Blind Spot Assist.
With a price tag of RM 515,888.00, the GLE offers a truly luxurious SUV experience. It offers the opulence of an S-class in a more practical form. Utilizing a mild hybrid platform sets the GLE apart from hybrid competitors. However, it’s worth noting that as Mercedes refreshes its lineup, a replacement for the GLE may be on the horizon. In the meantime, if you’re seeking a large and luxurious SUV, the GLE is a compelling option to consider.
