In my observations, Subaru stands out as a unique brand with a substantial level of acceptance in Malaysia. While Subaru Malaysia continues to offer high-performance vehicles in the market, their SUV models, namely the Subaru XV and Subaru Forester, have become their mainstay. With the recent release of the updated Forester in Malaysia, I had the opportunity to closely examine this SUV and determine if it holds up to the standards set by other Japanese brands.

The refreshed Forester has undergone some subtle exterior enhancements to breathe new life into its appearance. However, these changes may go unnoticed to the untrained eye. The front bumper has been redesigned to distinguish it from the previous model, and a fresh front grille imparts a sportier demeanor to the SUV. The new gray-colored grille is a significant improvement over the chrome grille seen in the pre-facelift version. Additionally, the headlights have also received updates to differentiate them from the previous model.

The changes become even more discreet when we shift our attention to the rear of the vehicle. Elements such as the taillights, rear bumper, and tailgate remain unchanged from the pre-facelift model. To inject more charisma into the Forester, Subaru Malaysia introduced the GT Edition body kit, which bolsters the SUV’s road presence. This body kit includes a front lip spoiler and side skirts, contributing to a sportier appearance. Furthermore, a more aggressive roof spoiler is added to enhance the vehicle’s aesthetics. Despite these enhancements, the Forester’s tall stature means that it’s unlikely to scrape its body kit when navigating over bumps. Lastly, the Forester comes equipped with 18-inch rims, which may appear smaller due to the body kit. Without the body kit, the rims complement the vehicle’s overall look, and they are wrapped in 225/55 R18 tires.

Stepping inside, the Forester’s cabin immediately feels spacious, a perception aided by the expansive glass surrounding it. The interior adheres to the familiar Japanese SUV design, featuring an array of buttons on the dashboard. Nevertheless, the interior exhibits excellent fit and finish, with soft-touch materials adorning all the key touch points.

In terms of dashboard design and layout, Subaru prioritizes functionality over style. In 2023, the Forester’s dashboard may seem dated, but it appeals to those who value familiarity in their vehicles. This approach extends to the instrument cluster, which combines analog dials with a central 4.2-inch multi-info display. While the instrument cluster is easy to read, it’s noteworthy that Subaru employs a separate screen for adjusting vehicle settings.

This additional display is situated at the top center of the dashboard and serves not only as a control hub for settings but also displays various Forester-specific data that may interest some drivers. Most automakers have integrated this information and settings into the infotainment system, but Subaru has maintained a separate screen for these functions. Speaking of the infotainment system, it features an 8-inch screen with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay compatibility. Within the infotainment interface, a 360-degree camera aids in parking, although the camera’s definition could benefit from improvement for better visibility.

Moving to the seats, the Forester offers electrically adjustable front seats to facilitate finding the ideal driving position. However, lumbar support adjustment is lacking, which could enhance front seat comfort. Given its SUV nature, the side support is not class-leading, but the ergonomic layout ensures that everything is easily accessible for the driver.

As part of the GT edition package, the Forester boasts quilted seats that impart a touch of elegance to the cabin. The leather used throughout the cabin is exceptionally soft to the touch. In addition to the quilted seats, the front seats feature the “GT” word embossed on them as part of the GT edition package. To top it all off, the throttle and brake pedals are crafted from aluminum, adding a sporty touch.

Entering the rear seat, one encounters a spacious and comfortable environment. Ample legroom and headroom are available for rear passengers, and the seat back recline angle is conducive to comfortable relaxation or even napping. Rear passengers also benefit from two center AC vents and two USB charging ports for added convenience. Behind the rear seats, the Forester provides a generous 498-liter boot space, more than sufficient for most family needs. Folding the rear seats further expands the cargo area, easily accessible via the automatic tailgate for added convenience.

Powering the Forester is Subaru’s signature 2.0L naturally aspirated flat-4 engine, coupled with a Continuous Variable Transmission (CVT) and Subaru’s renowned Asymmetrical All-Wheel Drive system. This powertrain delivers a maximum power output of 154 hp at 6,000 rpm and peak torque of 196 Nm at 4,000 rpm. These figures enable the Forester to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 10.3 seconds and reach a top speed of 193 km/h.

At idle, the smoothness of the flat-4 engine stands out, surpassing the typical characteristics of an inline-4 engine. While the engine’s performance is sufficient for daily driving, it is better suited for leisurely cruising than delivering sudden bursts of power. Uphill driving may challenge this powertrain to some extent. Notably, the CVT transmission efficiently transfers power to the wheels, maintaining a pleasant driving experience. Subaru’s CVT is commendable for its minimal noise, making the driving experience enjoyable. Nevertheless, some rubber-band effect is noticeable during acceleration, though it remains tolerable.

In terms of ride quality, the Forester features a comfort-oriented suspension that aligns with its family-oriented image. This setup allows for some body roll when cornering, but the Forester retains its composure thanks to the ample grip provided by the all-wheel drive system. The steering offers direct feedback, providing a clear sense of the front wheels’ positioning. It’s a confidence-inspiring SUV when driven spiritedly in corners, although most buyers are likely to favor a more relaxed driving style, given the SUV’s intended purpose.

Braking performance in the Forester is commendable, with Subaru’s engineers successfully fine-tuning the brake pedal feel. This precise modulation instills confidence in the driver, allowing for easy adjustment of braking force. When pressed hard, the brakes deliver robust stopping power. One of the major updates for the latest Forester is the introduction of the new Eyesight 4.0 Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS), which functions seamlessly despite being a camera-based system. Subaru has enhanced the software of Eyesight 4.0 to improve the accuracy of its ADAS features, contributing to an enjoyable driving experience.

In terms of safety, the Forester comes equipped with an array of features, including six airbags, Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS), Brake Assist (BA), Emergency Stop Signal, Vehicle Dynamic Control System (VDC), and Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD). In the realm of driver assistance, the Forester boasts Pre-Collision Braking, Autonomous Emergency Steering, Adaptive Cruise Control, Lane Centering Function, and Lane Departure Prevention.

In conclusion, the Forester proves to be a practical SUV capable of competing effectively in the SUV market. Its spacious interior, comfortable accommodations, and reliability make it well-suited for family duties. Additionally, it’s all-wheel drive system caters to those with an active lifestyle, ready to tackle challenging conditions. Priced at RM 196,288, the Forester emerges as a compelling choice for individuals in need of an SUV with robust all-wheel drive capabilities.
