When I recently returned the Audi A3, my attention was drawn to a brand new Audi Q5 Sportback. This unexpected encounter inspired me to reach out to Audi Malaysia to request it for a review. Though I had previously reviewed the Q5 SUV, it became evident that the locally available variant has a different specification. With this Audi Q5 Sportback, I finally have the opportunity to explore the local spec Audi Q5 in depth. Equipped with an impressive array of features, this Q5 Sportback finally meets my expectations as a vehicle in this price point. In this review, I’ll delve into the details of the latest Audi Q5 Sportback and assess whether it justifies its price tag.
The Q5 Sportback stands out from the Q5 SUV with its distinct rear design. Audi has taken a sportier approach, predominantly blacking out exterior elements and leaving only the badges in chrome. This decision imparts a more aggressive and cohesive appearance, especially when paired with the District Green color.
The “Sportback” designation indicates a shift towards a sporty coupe profile for the Q5. The rear of the vehicle now features a sloping tailgate that opens as one large piece. Like it’s SUV counterpart, the Q5 Sportback boasts full LED headlights and taillights, but I encountered some difficulty in activating the automatic high beam feature. Furthermore, the Q5 Sportback is fitted with eye-catching 20-inch dual-tone rims wrapped in 255/45 R 20 tires, a significant upgrade from the standard Q5 SUV rims.
Stepping inside, the Q5 Sportback’s interior bears a resemblance to the Q5 SUV but with notable distinctions. This particular specification, offered by Audi Malaysia, comes with a host of additional features. While the dashboard layout remains familiar, the silver trim pieces in the Q5 SUV have been replaced with fingerprint-prone piano black trims in the Q5 Sportback. Although visually appealing, these trims require frequent cleaning.
The instrument cluster and infotainment screen mirror those found in the Q5 SUV. However, what truly sets the Q5 Sportback apart is its enhanced audio system – a 19-speaker Bang & Olufsen 3D sound system that elevates the auditory experience. This premium sound system added considerable enjoyment to my driving experience. Additionally, the Q5 Sportback features standard ambient lighting, which, while not the brightest on the market, lends an air of sophistication to the interior.
The front seats of the Q5 Sportback differ significantly from those in the Q5 SUV. They are sportier and more supportive, providing excellent body-hugging comfort during spirited driving. These seats are upholstered in the same fine Nappa leather found in Audi’s A3, offering a delightful tactile experience.
Moving to the rear seats, I found them to be exceptionally comfortable with ample legroom, even considering the sloping roofline. Although accommodating three passengers in the rear is feasible, the tall center tunnel may pose a challenge for the middle occupant. Rear passengers are also treated to sunshades on the rear windows for added comfort. Like the Q5 SUV, the Sportback maintains its generous 510L of boot space, an impressive feat. Moreover, the rear seats can be folded down to further expand the cargo capacity.
Under the hood, the Q5 Sportback shares the same powertrain as its SUV counterpart: a 2.0L turbocharged engine paired with a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission. Power is distributed to all four wheels through Audi’s renowned Quattro all-wheel drive system. In brief, this powertrain can generate 249kW and 370 Nm of torque. The Q5 Sportback accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in just 6.1 seconds, with a top speed of 240 km/h.
Similar to the Q5 SUV, there is a slight delay in throttle response in the Q5 Sportback, which might be attributed to turbo lag or the vehicle’s weight. Nevertheless, once in motion, the performance is undeniably impressive. The engine feels robust and provides smooth acceleration, offering a well-mannered driving experience. The dual-clutch transmission enhances the overall powertrain refinement.
The Malaysian spec Q5 Sportback is equipped with adaptive suspension, delivering a comfortable ride even in its softest setting, reminiscent of the Q5 SUV. Even in dynamic mode, the suspension retains a comfortable feel. However, the stiffer suspension becomes evident when navigating corners, effectively reducing body roll on twisty roads. The steering weight varies with different drive modes; in comfort mode, it feels over-assisted, while in dynamic mode, it tightens up. Although the steering is responsive, the vehicle’s weight becomes noticeable when cornering. Nevertheless, the Q5 Sportback remains a capable vehicle, especially on the right type of road.
In terms of braking, the Q5 Sportback boasts robust brakes that efficiently bring the SUV to a halt. However, I did notice that the brake pedal’s biting point is somewhat low, requiring it to be depressed quite far before the vehicle starts slowing down. A more responsive brake pedal would have been appreciated. Another notable enhancement in the Q5 Sportback is the addition of advanced Driver Assistance systems, enhancing the vehicle’s safety features. These systems include Audi adaptive cruise control, Audi pre sense rear and basic, Lane departure warning, and Lane change assist.
Despite its price tag of RM 480,223.60, which may be considered high, the Audi Q5 Sportback faces competition with similar pricing. Nevertheless, with its comprehensive set of features, this Q5 variant represents excellent value for money. It impressively combines luxury and performance, leaving a positive and lasting impression on those fortunate enough to experience it.
