Perodua recently reaffirmed its dedication to environmental preservation with the recent organization of the Perodua Tree Planting Programme at the renowned Kuala Selangor Nature Park in Kuala Selangor. This initiative is part of the UMW Green Shoots Initiative (UGS), a Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) program launched in late 2021 with the goal of planting a total of 300,000 trees by the end of 2023. Currently, approximately 174,000 trees have been planted since the launch, with the remaining 133,000 trees slated for planting by year-end.
Mangroves, being an essential component of Malaysia’s ecosystem, play a crucial role in safeguarding riverbanks against environmental hazards such as flooding and tsunamis. Furthermore, they contribute to water quality preservation by filtering nutrients and pollutants from stormwater runoff before they reach seagrass habitats and coral reefs. Mangroves also serve as vital nursery habitats for numerous commercial fish and shellfish species, thereby supporting local seafood abundance.
Recognizing the immense benefits of mangrove trees, Perodua partnered with the Malaysian Nature Society for the tree planting activity as part of their CSR endeavors. Perodua’s President and Chief Executive Officer, Dato’ Sri Zainal Abidin Ahmad, emphasized the company’s commitment to its Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) journey, stating that such programs reflect their dedication to achieving their goals. The tree planting event aligns with SDG Goal 15: Life on Land, which aims to halt biodiversity loss, prevent land degradation and desertification, and promote sustainable management and use of terrestrial ecosystems and forests.
By organizing the tree planting activity, Perodua seeks to raise awareness and promote the conservation of our planet. The one-day program saw the active participation of 120 Perodua volunteers, along with the presence of key personnel such as the Group Chief Financial Officer, Cik Noor Zakiyah Hasan, and the General Manager of Corporate Relations and Communications Division, Puan Sulasi Haji Mahadi.
