I have been eagerly requesting to review the Mercedes AMG A45S from Mercedes Benz Malaysia (MBM) for quite some time now. However, it has always eluded me as the dealers were prioritizing it for customers’ test drives. Fortunately, an opportunity recently presented itself when the initially requested vehicle became occupied. This allowed me to fully experience the Mercedes Benz A45S, the ultimate hot hatch from Mercedes.
The A45S is a fully imported model from Germany and happens to be the most expensive A-class vehicle available in Malaysia. In line with its powerful engine, the A45S boasts a distinctively aggressive AMG styling. This aggressive appearance is further enhanced by the addition of aerodynamic panels fitted throughout the vehicle.
Starting from the front, the A45S features large intakes on the front bumper to cool down the engine. Below that, there is a front splitter that increases downforce at the front of the vehicle. The flicks on the sides of the front bumper help guide air around the front wheels, reducing drag. The A45S also sports the signature Pan-Americana grille, a distinctive feature of AMG vehicles.
In terms of lighting, the A45S is equipped with full matrix LED headlights, similar to the A35 model. The taillights, on the other hand, retain the standard full LED design. The rear of the A45S showcases a sporty bumper with quad exhausts, differentiating it from the twin exhausts of the A35. Aerodynamically, there is a large diffuser at the center of the rear bumper and a prominent spoiler on the roof of the tailgate. The vehicle’s appearance is completed by the inclusion of 19-inch sporty-looking rims wrapped in 245/35 R19 tires.
Stepping inside the A45S, one will find a typical A-class interior that closely resembles the regular A-class model in terms of appearance. Only the seats and the steering wheel serve as noticeable differentiators between the A45S and other A-class variants. Personally, I find the A35’s interior to be more special due to the additional graphics that Mercedes has incorporated.
The A45S interior is practically identical to that of the A35, with the exception of the added graphics. They share the same steering wheel, seats, infotainment system graphics, and instrument cluster graphics. The inclusion of the heads-up display is a notable feature that I appreciate. In terms of driving position, the A45S offers a sporty setup. The seats provide ample support, ensuring a snug fit during spirited driving.
Since I have not previously reviewed any of the hatchback versions of the A-class, I will take the opportunity to thoroughly assess it, even if it doesn’t differ significantly from the sedan variant. The rear seating area comfortably accommodates two adults with sufficient legroom and headroom. However, due to the vehicle’s width, fitting three adults in the back can be a tight squeeze. I particularly like the reclining feature of the rear seats, allowing for comfortable seating during extended journeys. As a hatchback, the A45S offers a boot space of 370 liters, which is decent for its size and can be expanded by folding down the rear seats.
The highlight of the A45S lies in its engine, powering this hyper hatch. The hand-built 2.0L turbocharged engine is paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission, delivering power to all four wheels through the 4Matic+ all-wheel-drive system. This powertrain is capable of producing 421 hp at 6,750 rpm and peak torque of 500 Nm at 5,000 rpm. These impressive figures allow the A45S to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in just 3.9 seconds, with a top speed of 270 km/h.
As the most powerful A-class variant, the A45S leaves no room for complaints about its power. This engine effortlessly propels the car into triple-digit speeds. However, what truly sets the A45S apart is its drive mode selection. As a full-fledged AMG model, the A45S features a Race mode that allows drivers to fully exploit the car’s capabilities.
When engaged in Race mode, the first noticeable change is the opening of the exhaust valve, resulting in a deeper idle exhaust note. On the road, the exhaust produces satisfying pops and bangs at certain RPMs, evoking a sense of excitement for the driver. In addition, Race mode enhances throttle response, allowing the engine to rev all the way to the redline and enabling the driver to utilize the engine’s full power. The transmission also becomes more responsive, shifting gears rapidly and ensuring the driver is in the appropriate gear, especially during aggressive driving. The 4Matic+ system can also redirect power to the rear wheels, making the car more enjoyable to drive on the edge, allowing for controlled four-wheel slides when powering out of corners.
Furthermore, the adaptive suspension stiffens in Race mode. While the suspension is already on the firmer side, enabling Race mode intensifies the feedback from the road. However, on Malaysian roads, known for their uneven surfaces, this can result in a slightly bumpy ride. In terms of steering, Race mode provides a more direct feel, reminiscent of the A35’s steering. Nevertheless, I believe it falls slightly short in terms of sharpness compared to the A3’s steering.
Braking power is a strong suit of the A45S, as expected from a performance vehicle. The brakes effectively dissipate heat, enabling them to withstand demanding driving conditions. They inspire confidence and offer precise modulation for the driver. In terms of safety, the A45S comes with a comprehensive set of standard features, including 7 airbags, Blind Spot Assist, Active Lane Keeping Assist, Active Brake Assist, and a tire pressure monitoring system. However, it lacks adaptive cruise control, which is available in the A35.
As the ultimate A-class model, the A45S provides an exhilarating driving experience. However, with a price tag of RM 481,888, it is undoubtedly a significant investment. If one desires the ultimate A-class experience, this is the price to pay. However, for those who can settle for the A35, it serves as a compelling alternative. The A35 provides more than enough performance for Malaysian roads, making it a highly enjoyable option.
