Porsche has created a new sports car called the 718 Spyder RS, which is the convertible version of the 718 Cayman GT4 RS. This car has a powerful naturally aspirated six-cylinder boxer engine that is also used in the Porsche 911 GT3 Cup racing car. The engine has a high-revving design and produces 368 kW (500 PS) of power. The manual soft-top roof is lightweight and enhances the sound of the engine. The car also has a stainless steel sports exhaust system and air inlets behind the headrests.

The new 718 Spyder RS has the same powertrain as the 718 Cayman GT4 RS coupe. Its six-cylinder boxer engine has a cylinder displacement of 4.0 liters, can rev up to 9,000 rpm, and generates an output of 368 kW (500 PS) and maximum torque of 450 Newton meters. This combined with a short-ratio seven-speed PDK transmission allows the car to go from 0-100 km/h in 3.4 seconds and hit the 200-km/h mark in just 10.9 seconds. The new Spyder RS has an extra 59 kW (80 PS) and can accelerate to 100 km/h half a second faster than the regular 718 Spyder. It has a top speed of 308 km/h and is lighter than both the 718 Spyder and the 718 Cayman GT4 RS, weighing in at 1,410 kilograms. The Spyder RS is exclusively available with the Porsche dual clutch transmission (PDK) and has gearshift paddles on the steering wheel.

At the front, the new Porsche 718 Spyder RS and the 718 Cayman GT4 RS have almost the same front end. The front bonnet is made of CFRP and has a wide air outlet above the bumper, and two NACA ducts improve brake cooling without affecting the car’s aerodynamics. Sideblades on the bumper ends increase downforce, and the front spoiler lip is slightly shorter than the Cayman GT4 RS. The 718 Spyder RS has a tear-off edge like a ducktail instead of a wing. All these parts work together to maintain the car’s aerodynamic balance and ensure maximum stability while driving at high speeds.

For the soft top, the new 718 Spyder RS has a lightweight soft-top that is easy to operate manually. It is made up of two parts: a sun sail and a weather deflector. You can remove them together or separately and store them in the car. The sun sail can also act as a “Bimini top,” providing shade from the sun while keeping the passenger compartment mostly open. When used with the weather deflector, the soft-top provides excellent rain protection. The whole roof, including the mechanical parts, weighs just 18.3 kg, which is much lighter than other models in the 718 series. If desired, drivers can leave the top at home to reduce the car’s weight by an additional eight kilograms, weather permitting.

By combining bits from the 718 Cayman GT4 RS and 718 Spyder, the 718 Spyder RS car chassis is designed to provide an enjoyable driving experience on winding roads. The car comes with Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM) with sports tuning, and it has been lowered by 30 millimetres. It also includes Porsche Torque Vectoring (PTV) with mechanical limited-slip differential, ball-jointed suspension bearings, and 20-inch forged aluminium wheels. The car is known for its razor-sharp steering precision and agile, neutral handling. The ride height, camber, track, and anti-roll bar can all be adjusted separately. Compared to the 718 Cayman GT4 RS, the car has a more relaxed, convertible-style set-up because the spring and damper rates have been lowered.

To match the sporty characteristic of the 718 Spyder RS, the interior is designed to not only look sporty, but functional and ergonomic. The RS sports steering wheel is covered with a material called Race-Tex and has a yellow 12-o’clock marking. The standard seats are made of a lightweight material called CFRP, with a carbon-weave finish and offer great lateral support. The seat covers are made of black leather, with a perforated Race-Tex seat centre that has a contrasting colour in either Arctic Grey or Carmine Red. The headrests have a ‘Spyder RS’ logo embroidered in the corresponding colour. The dashboard and trims are covered with leather. The car is available in four plain colours and three metallic colours, including the new Vanadium Grey Metallic, Arctic Grey, Shark Blue and Ruby Star Neo.

In terms of options, the Spyder RS can come with a Weissach Package that includes lightweight forged magnesium wheels and a sports exhaust system with titanium tailpipes. The car’s dashboard is covered with anti-glare Race-Tex, and buyers can get a special Porsche Design Timepieces chronograph that matches the car’s style. The watch has a lightweight titanium case, a carbon dial, and a strap made from vehicle leather. The rotor on the back matches the design of the car’s wheel rims. The new Porsche 718 Spyder RS will debut in June at an event in Stuttgart-Zuffenhausen and will also appear at the Goodwood Festival of Speed.
