Proton’s plan for the New Energy Vehicle (NEV) market is gaining momentum as its senior management attended the global launch of the Smart #3 at Auto Shanghai 2023. This sports utility coupe is the brand’s second new electric vehicle (EV) model after the #1 and is expected to debut in Europe later this year before going on sale.
Proton, which has officially became the importer and distributor for smart vehicles in Malaysia and Thailand through its subsidiary PRO-NET, plans to launch its first offering in Malaysia, the smart #1, in Q4 of 2023. This will be followed by the smart #3, which will go on sale in China and Europe before expanding to other markets such as Malaysia.
According to Dr Li Chunrong, CEO of Proton and Chairman of PRO-NET, the company is responding to the government’s call to transform Malaysia into a regional hub for next-generation vehicles. Proton’s first step is to launch the mild hybrid-powered Proton X90, followed by the smart #1. However, following the signing of a Heads of Agreement (HoA) document with Geely earlier this month and the subsequent visit to the Zeekr intelligent factory by the MITI Minister, Proton is considering accelerating its timeline for model introductions.
Preparations are underway for the launch of the smart #1, with selected media already testing the vehicle on Proton’s test track. Additional media and public preview sessions are planned before the vehicle goes on sale. Proton is working on recruiting dealers, developing charging solutions, and finding new and innovative ways to deliver a brand experience in line with the core values of the smart brand.
Dr Li Chunrong envisions PRO-NET as the main driver for EV models at Proton, meaning that the company will also expand the range of smart models in Malaysia in the future. Proton’s resources are fully focused on ensuring a smooth market introduction for the #1 and providing customers with the support expected of a premium EV product.
