UMW Toyota Motor (UMWT) recently conducted a tree planting program in Tanjung Tuan, Melaka in partnership with the Malaysian Nature Society and in conjunction with the Raptor Watch 2023 event. This initiative is aligned with Toyota Motor Corporation’s commitment to achieving carbon neutrality by 2050 across all its business operations worldwide, not just its products. One strategy is to offset carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions, a gas that contributes to global warming and climate change. The UMW Green Shoots Initiative (UGS Initiative) aims to offset CO2 emissions in Malaysia and support the National 100 Million Trees Planting Campaign while aligning with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UNSDG). The event also aims to raise awareness and ensure the conservation of the Tanjung Tuan Forest Reserve. The planting of mangrove saplings will help rehabilitate the mangrove swamp ecosystem, which was destroyed in 2020 due to an oil spill.
Up to 6,100 trees will be planted by 250 volunteers, including UMWT staff, university students and teachers, and members of the public. The President of UMW Toyota Motor, Datuk Ravindran K., said that the company is proud to contribute to environmental rehabilitation and preservation through the UMW Green Shoots Initiative. Additionally, the company has been assembling Hybrid Electric Vehicles in Malaysia since 2022 and will announce further plans on the electrification of the Toyota product range.
Datuk Ravindran K. further stated, “As a good corporate citizen, we can provide resources to support efforts in addressing climate change and achieving carbon neutrality.” The UGS Initiative is part of UMW Toyota Motor’s commitment to sustainability and preserving the environment. By participating in the tree planting program, the company is not only offsetting its CO2 emissions but also contributing to the rehabilitation of the mangrove swamp ecosystem in Tanjung Tuan.
