The 2022/2023 edition of the Toyota Eco Youth program concluded with a closing ceremony and exhibition at Concorde Hotel in Shah Alam. The event was attended by representatives from the Ministry of Education Malaysia and UMW Toyota Motor. The TEY program, aimed at secondary school students, is part of UMW Toyota’s ongoing effort to raise awareness and promote environmental responsibility among the youth.

The theme of this year’s program was “Championing Mobility” and it saw 16 teams from across the country participate, competing for a cash prize pool of up to RM71,500. The top five teams, who impressed the judges with their innovative solutions, were:

  1. Maktab Tentera Diraja (Mtd) – HEXA-HOLD, a hexabrick system made from recycled HDPE and LDPE plastic aimed at reducing soil erosion.
  2. Sultan Alam Shah Islamic College (Team Synergy) – Expand-a-bag, an expandable bag made from reused plastic and fabric that promotes sustainability.
  3. SMK Kemumin, Kota Bharu – Terra Saviour, a belt made from used clothing that reduces clothing waste.
  4. SMK Taman Bunga Raya 1 – TWEPS, a system that detects temperature and carbon dioxide levels and sends alerts to prevent wildfires.
  5. SBP Integrasi Rawang – In-FleCT, an automatic incinerator that converts waste into fertilizer without releasing harmful smoke.

The winning team received RM20,000, followed by RM15,000 for second place, RM10,000 for third place, RM7,000 for fourth place, and RM5,000 for fifth place. Awards were also given to the Most Supportive Teacher, the top three Agent Ms, and the Best Community Engagement.

TEY is designed to empower the next generation with project management and critical thinking skills, using the Toyota 8-Step Problem Solving Methodology and the Toyota Motor Corporation’s Guiding Principles. The program focuses on sustainability, encouraging students to develop solutions in four C.A.S.E categories: Clothing, Apps, Smart Tools, and Eco-Friendly Vehicles.

In the future, TEY will place more emphasis on electrification, and UMW Toyota Motor is committed to helping students develop their innovations through Intensive Prototype Development and collaboration with potential stakeholders.
