In March 2022, Volkswagen Malaysia introduced the updated Volkswagen Tiguan Allspace. It was pretty memorable as it coincided with my completion of the review of the pre-facelift Volkswagen Tiguan Allspace R-Line. The pre-facelift Tiguan Allspace proved to be an excellent value for its price as a continental SUV. In this updated vehicle, I will take a closer look at the changes on the updated vehicle, and see if it made the vehicle better.
On the exterior, Volkswagen designers have given the updated Tiguan Allspace R-Line some cosmetic upgrade, featuring a sleek and contemporary appearance. Despite this, the general silhouette of the Tiguan Allspace remains unchanged. The front of the vehicle now exudes a sharper look, with the incorporation of new LED headlights and a revitalized daytime running light. The front grille is emphasized by a light bar connecting the two headlights, and the front bumper is accented with black highlights for added boldness.
Going to the rear, the Tiguan Allspace R-Line also received some changes as well. The taillights have been updated and now feature sequential lighting in the dark, adding to the vehicle’s aesthetics. The rear also sports a newly designed bumper with a light reflector strip that runs across it, resembling a light bar. Additionally, quad fake exhaust has been added to the bumper, enhancing the sporty look of the vehicle. The facelift model now comes with newly designed rims all around, which are an improvement over the pre-facelift model and are still fitted with 255/45 R19 tires.
Regarding the interior, the changes are perceived as delicate. Nevertheless, these updates do elevate the SUV to contemporary standards to align with VW’s current design philosophy. The first alteration to the interior is the updated steering wheel, which is now identical to the one found in the 8th-generation Golf. The steering wheel now includes touch-sensitive buttons, which may take some time to get used to as they are not the most convenient to use. The new VW logo is prominently displayed on the steering wheel, indicating that this is a more recent vehicle.
At the driver’s seat, the Tiguan Allspace is equipped with a clear and easily readable digital instrument cluster. The infotainment system remains unchanged, however, the sound system has received an upgrade. The 10-speaker Harman Kardon system replaces the previous 8-speaker setup. The extra speakers are positioned on the dashboard, taking the place of the storage compartment located there. The improvement in sound quality is noticeable, although it’s only a slight enhancement.
In addition to that, the climate controls on the Tiguan Allspace R-Line are now the same climate controls found on the Arteon and Passat. However, the updated gear lever is a design aspect that falls short for me. While it appears more durable, it detracts from the sleek appearance of the SUV and seems more suited to a pickup truck. On the other hand, the front and rear seats remain mostly unchanged from the previous model. The front passenger seat, however, has been updated to include 8-way electrical adjustability.
The updated SUV still features the same powertrain, consisting of a 2.0L turbocharged EA888 engine. This engine generates a maximum output of 220PS, which can be achieved between 4,500-6,200 rpm, and produces a peak torque of 350 Nm in the range of 1,500-4,400 rpm. The engine is paired with the same 7-speed dual clutch transmission and transfers power to all four wheels through the 4motion system. The driving experience remains largely unchanged from the previous model, so you can refer to the review of the pre-facelift version over here:
Driver assistance system has also been updated for the 2022 Tiguan Allspace R-Line. The updated model now comes with Lane Keep Assist as a standard feature, adding a new level of safety to the vehicle. While it is a good start, it would be great to see even more safety and driver assistance systems included in a car that is designed to transport families. The 2022 Tiguan Allspace R-Line is fitted with a comprehensive suite of safety features, including 7 airbags, Driver Alert System, Hill Descent Control, Lane Assist, and a Tyre Pressure Load Indicator.
With a price tag of RM 235,990.00, this is a significant increase of RM 26,000 compared to the pre-facelift Tiguan Allspace R-Line. Despite the updates, I was expecting to see more advanced driving assistance systems included in this facelift. Nonetheless, the Tiguan Allspace R-Line is still just as good as its predecessor, and the enhancements made to the vehicle have only made it better.
