When the facelifted Peugeot 3008 was launched back in 2021, the facelifted 5008 hit the market at the same time as well. The 5008 is the 7 seater version of the 3008, which means many of the parts are shared between both models. In Malaysia, we tend to see more 3008 compared to the 5008, which indicates most buyers are choosing the 3008. This time round, I’ll be reviewing the Peugeot 5008 and see why most buyers are choosing the 3008 over the 5008.

Comparing the 3008 to the 5008, the 5008 is 194mm wider and 22mm taller than the 3008. These differences are meant to fit 2 additional seats in the rear for the 5008. At the front, the 5008 gets a similar front end to the 3008, but the 5008 became a different vehicle from the rear doors onwards. The rear doors on the 5008 are longer than the 3008, which is meant to create a larger opening to allow 3rd row passengers to climb on board. On top of that, the rear of the 5008 has also been squared off to make room for the 3rd row passengers’ head. Other than that, there’s no other differences between the 5008 and the 3008.

For the interior, everything from the dashboard to the front seats on the 5008 are carried over from the 3008. Just like the 3008, the 5008 also received the same updates that was seen on the 3008. The updates that come on both of the models include the new larger infotainment screen and the wireless charger. If you’re interested to find out more, you can watch the 3008 review.

With the 5008, I’m here to review the 2nd and 3rd row seats. In the 2nd row, the shoulder room is similar to the 3008, but 2nd row passengers get a more spacious legroom to rest their legs. This is partly due to the additional 110mm wheelbase that the 5008 have over the 3008, and the 2nd row seats also have the ability to slide forwards and aft. Apart from the improved legroom, the movable seats also made space for the 3rd row passengers to climb on board. As for the 3rd row seats, I find that the seats are really small and I can barely fit into it. By the looks of it, the 3rd row seats are meant to fit small kids and are only suitable for short distances.

With all the seats up, the boot space in the 5008 is barely usable to store any items. In order to make the 5008 usable, it is better to keep the 3rd row seats down to free up extra space in the boot. With the 3rd row seats stowed away, the 5008 have a huge 952L boot space, which is 361L more than the 3008. If the owner would like to store more items, the 5008 has the ability to fold all the seats down to expand the boot space to a whopping 2,042L of loading capacity.

Under the hood, the 5008 shares the same powertrain as the 3008. This powertrain is Peugeot’s famous 1.6L turbocharged 4 cylinder engine, and it’s mated to a 6 speed automatic transmission. This engine has the ability to produce 165 hp at 6,000 RPM, and a peak torque of 240 Nm from a low 1,400RPM and the power is being sent to the front wheels. The 5008 has the ability to accelerate from 0 – 100km/h in 8.9 seconds, and to a top speed of 205 km/h. The 5008 drives very similar to the 3008, and the engine is strong enough to drag the additional weight that the 5008 has.

In terms of the ride, Peugeot keeps the suspension tuning of the 5008 similar to the 3008. While the handling characteristic is also very similar to the 3008, the extra wheelbase on the 5008 made the SUV more stable at higher speed. Even though the 5008 is longer than the 3008, the 5008 still retains the impressive turning circle that the 3008 has. And for the brakes, the brakes on the 5008 are strong and the brake pedal is rather sensitive as well. This means that I need to recalibrate my foot to ensure that I can drive the 5008 smoothly.

Safety wise, the 5008 also gets additional driver assistance systems that was also seen on the 3008. The safety systems available on the 5008 include 6 airbags, Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), Electronic Brake-Force Distribution (EBD), Emergency Brake Assist (EBA), Dynamic Stability Control (DSC), Anti-Skid Regulation (ASR), Advanced Grip Control, Hill Assist Descent Control (HADC), and Hill Start Assist. And for the driver assistance systems, the 5008 comes with Blind Spot Monitoring, Active Lane Keeping Assist, and Driver Attention Warning.

With a price tag of RM 183,288.00, the 5008 is designed for those who want a practical SUV that can fit 2 additional people in a pinch. The thing is that most 5008 owners will use the vehicle as a 5-seater, and this is also the same reason why most people choose the 3008 over the 5008. If you really want to load more items and occasionally carry 2 additional people, the 5008 will be the vehicle for you.
