After much teasing, the N performance recently added another variant into their lineup, the Hyundai Elantra N. Elantra N is a high-performance variant of the current generation Elantra, which adds on dynamic driving capability and aggressive design elements on top of the standard model.

Being the N product, the Elantra N will be powered by the powerful 2.0-liter turbo 4 cylinder engine that is found on Kona N. This engine is able to produce 280PS and 392Nm of torque. On top of that, power could be turn up to 290PS with the N Grin Shift (NGS) system. The Elantra N will be mated to 8-speed wet dual clutch transmission (DCT) to allow the Elantra N to accelerate from 0-100 km/h in just 5.3 seconds, and hitting a top speed of 250 km/h.

In order to handle the power, the Elantra N has been fitted with the N Corner Carving Differential (e-LSD, electronic Limited Slip Differential), Variable Exhaust Valve System and Launch Control to keep the car on the road. For the DCT models, N Grin Shift (NGS), N Power Shift (NPS) and N Track Sense Shift (NTS) are provided as standard features to maximize driving pleasure.

To slow the car down, the Elantra N has been equipped with a 360-mm brake discs to provide the optimum braking performance. To cool the brake down, there are a cooling hole is applied to the dust cover along with a brake air guide structure to improve cooling efficiency and the area is also optimized to vent heat from braking friction.

The Elantra N also receives the integrated drive axle (IDA), which is a technology developed for WRC to withstand extreme lateral g-force. This is achieved by integrating drive shaft, wheel hub and bearing that also enabled a weight saving of 1.7kg. With the integration of the intake duct and air cleaner in the intake compartment, this has helped optimized the engine response by reducing the suction pressure by 10% or more.

For the suspension, the Elantra N will get the dual compound insulator to the front suspension. Paired with the dual compound trailing arm bush, this actually improves the ride and handling, yet it reduces the noise, vibration and harshness (NVH). The four-point strut rings and rear stiff bars further strengthens the chassis, and the R-MDPS has also be tune to provide a consistent steering feel. Contact patch found on the Elantra N will be the 245-size Michelin PS4S tires on 19-inch wheel to support all the performance upgrade.

In order to enhance the driving pleasure, the Elantra N will feature the N Sound Equalizer (NSE), which pumps out a more realistic and dynamic engine sound while driving. Hyundai engineers have not forgotten about the real exhaust note, the Elantra N will get a variable exhaust valve system, which delivers N’s distinctive ‘popcorn’ and ‘bang’ sounds, now uses a linear control method to reduce the booming sound during idling while maintaining the distinctive N exhaust note.

To make the Elantra N special, the Elantra N will receive an advanced infotainment system that was design specifically for the N model. The infotainment can display information such as lap times with the ‘N Track Map’ that records the driver’s location and movement on the circuit in real time. The instrument cluster will add feature such as oil and coolant temperatures, torque and turbo pressure to allow the driver to monitor these numbers when driving on track.

The Elantra N is built on the already sporty looking Hyundai Elantra. The Elantra N will get a new lip spoiler under the front bumper. There will be an N-exclusive red strip at the bottom of the front bumper continues along Elantra N’s side skirts. At the rear, the N-only wing-type spoiler, along with rear diffuser helps out on the aerodynamics of the car. In addition, an inverted triangle type N-only reflector and dual single muffler tip.

For the interior, the N-specific interior neatly conveys the N family look with the application of N-branded elements, including the steering wheel, shifter, seats, door scuff panels and metal pedals, etc. The NGS button that provided the 10PS boost for up to 20 seconds has been fitted on the steering wheel with the paddle shifters which is available on the DCT model only.

The N seat has reinforced bolsters, so that even if strong lateral acceleration occurs during sharp cornering, it firmly supports the upper and lower body to maintain a stable driving posture at all times. In addition, an optional N bucket seat with N emblem lighting has a position that is lower by 10 mm compared to the basic specification, designed for customers who pursue high-performance drivability. The N light bucket seat reduces the seat back thickness by 50 mm compared to the base model, further highlighting best-in-class rear seat roominess and practicality.
