BMW 2 Series Coupe has always embodies sporting prowess in a particularly concentrated form, with a vehicle concept focused squarely on dynamic excellence, an athletic design, powerful engines and sophisticated chassis technology. Recently, BMW unveiled their latest iteration of the BMW 2 Series Coupe, which will continue to follow up with the brand’s irresistible sporty two-door models.
For the 2021 BMW 2 Series Coupe, BMW engineers have ensured that it was thoroughly engineered and perfectly balanced driving attributes. To achieve that, BMW has kept the compact design of the 2 Series, but still manage to increase the torsional rigidity by 12% compared to the predecessor model. The almost perfect 50:50 weight distribution will ensure superb level of agility, steering precision and cornering dynamics.
The new 2 Series retains the classical three-box design of bonnet, passenger compartment and boot. It has an athletically sculpted surfaces and dynamic lines following the brand’s new design language represent an expression of pure driving pleasure. Prominent flared wheel arches and a muscular power dome at the centre of the bonnet give a clear indication of the 2 Series Coupé’s dynamic driving characteristics.
At the front, the signature BMW kidney grille is horizontal in design and features vertically arranged air flaps that can be opened and close electrically to cool the engine down. At both sides, the new full-LED headlights are positioned in the outer reaches of the front end. There is an additional option to opt for the adaptive LED Headlights with BMW Selective Beam non-dazzling high beam assistant, plus the M lights Shadow Line specification with darkened inlays.
At the rear, there are also the flared wheel arches to give it the sporty looks. Large glazed surfaces, a roofline that swoops down dynamically, and the short boot lid culminating in a pronounced spoiler lip are other identifying features of the compact sports model. The darkened LED rear lights positioned at the outer extremes of the rear end with compact contours.
For the interior, the dashboard is driver-focused cockpit design and modern control panel on the centre console accentuate the sporting aura inside. The Sport seats, and sport leather steering wheel further enhance the driving feel inside the car. High-quality materials and precise workmanship create a premium ambience above and beyond that of the predecessor model. A new design feature comes in the form of trapezoidal accent surfaces above the armrests in the doors.
In terms of the materials used, the 2 Series will come standard with cloth/Sensatec upholstery. For the M Sport specification cars, Alcantara/Sensatec trim will be feature alongside the M leather steering wheel and cushioned knee pads on the centre console. Standard specification also includes acoustic glazing for the windscreen and three-zone automatic climate control, while ambient lighting and a Harman Kardon surround sound system are among the items on the options list.
The new BMW 2 Series Coupé’s boot offers load capacity of 390 litres. The height of the loading edge has been reduced by 35 millimetres compared to the predecessor model. And additional versatility is provided by the standard 40:20:40 split/folding rear seat backrest. A removable trailer tow hitch is also available as an option, with a permissible trailer load of 1,600 kilograms.
The BMW 2 Series has benefited from chassis components originally designed for the BMW 4 Series models to provide supreme drivability. The two-joint spring strut front axle and five-link rear axle were designed to minimise weight and optimise rigidity. On standard, the new BMW 2 Series Coupé will get lift-related dampers enhance both the sporting ability of the new car and its ride comfort. For those who wanted a sportier drive, there are the optional M Sport suspension or adaptive M suspension to suit every driver’s need.
On the top of the range BMW M240i xDrive Coupé, there will come standard with the M Sport braking system and an M Sport differential. At each corner, the base BMW 2 Series Coupé is fitted with a 17-inch light-alloy wheels. For those who wanted to get bigger rims, they can go all the way up to 20 inches.
For the powertrain, the new 2 Series Coupé will start at the top with a turbocharged 3.0L in-line 6 engine on the BMW M240i xDrive Coupé. This powertrain will be able to produce 374 hp and 500 Nm of torque. The M240i xDrive Coupé is able to hit 100 km/h from standstill in 4.3 seconds. As for the BMW 220i Coupé, it is powered by a new 2.0L 4 cylinder engine that can produce 184 hp and 300 Nm of torque that allow the car to hit 100 km/h in 7.5 seconds. For those who want more power from the 2.0L engine, there is the 230i Coupé that comes with 245 hp that is expected to come in summer 2022.
Lastly, the 220d Coupé will be powered by a Two-stage turbocharging and 48V mild-hybrid technology 2.0L diesel engine. This engine has a maximum output of 190 hp and peak torque of 400 Nm that can accelerate from rest to 100 km/h in 6.9 seconds. All powertrain is mated to an eight-speed Steptronic transmission. The optional eight-speed Steptronic Sport transmission boasts even sharper gearshifts, paddles on the steering wheel, and Launch Control.
In the safety front, the new BMW 2 Series Coupé will get enhanced driver assistance systems. Standard equipment includes front-collision warning, Speed Limit Info, Lane Departure Warning and Cruise Control with brake function. There are also optional Driving Assistant Systems include Lane Change Warning, Rear Collision Prevention and rear crossing traffic warning, Active Cruise Control with Stop&Go function (including manual Speed Limit Assist), Park Distance Control, the Reversing Assistant, the Reversing Assist Camera, Surround View and Remote 3D View.
For connectivity, the new BMW 2 Series Coupé that is powered by the BMW Operating System 7. The new BMW 2 Series Coupé also gives customers on-board access to a range of advanced digital services, including the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant, BMW Digital Key, Connected Music and Remote Software Upgrades.
The standard-fitted BMW Live Cockpit comprises the iDrive operating system with 8.8-inch control display and a 5.1-inch colour display in the instrument cluster. The optional BMW Live Cockpit Professional features a fully digital screen grouping. It includes a high-resolution instrument cluster behind the steering wheel with a screen diagonal of 12.3 inches and a 10.25-inch control display.
